The danger of spreading infection in this manner is much She: . when the soil is wet. Water readi- dy becomes contaminated with the orga- nism and small streams and ponds that - receive drainage from diseased fields of- fer a potential source for the spread of the fungus when water from them is used for irrigation, transplanting, or in the beds. Black shank is often brought to the farm for the first time on plants; there- fore, growers can eliminate this source of _ infection by producing plants on the farm. The fungus may also be introduced with - contaminated manure or compost or by = applying infected tobacco material to the field or plant bed. The control measure for black shank may be separated into three categories; - (1) sanitation, (2) crop rotation, and (3) resistant varieties. SANITATION Included under sanitation would be, (1) the use of disease free plants, (2) treat- ment of beds with methyl bromide, (3) the - use of uncontaminated water, in the bed, for transplanting and for irrigation, (4) _the use of reasonable precautions to pre- vent spread of the disease by implements, man or farm animals, (5) the use of ma- (MAREET BULLETIN nure or Sonapoet known bs be disease free, and (6) the use in the field of the best known. root-knot control practices. CROP ROTATION When black shank is discovered in only a part of one field it may be possible to greatly delay its spread to the rest of the farm, if the field can be seeded or sodded to a grass or other crop that requires no cultivation. If this is not possible, tobacco production should not be attempted in the infected field with non-resistant varieties for five or six years, since the organism is known to persist in the soil for at least this period, Elsewhere on the farm and possibly on adjoining farms, tobacco should be grown in at least thre or four year rota- tions with crops that are not affected by the disease; such as cotton, peanuts, corn and small grains. This should be done even though resistant varieties of tobaceo are being grown. RESISTANT VARIETIES When black shank is known to have occurred on a farm it is safer to plant a disease resistant variety for several years even though tobacco is not grown in the infected field. The disadvantage of the use of currently available resistant va- rieties is that they do not generally pro- duce tobacco comparable in quality with Hicks. Also they are usually more diffi- cult to grow, harvest, and cure than the | varieties with which most Georgia grow- ers are familiar. _ space the plants at special distances apa | been conducted to determine what spac- | Ing gives the maximum yield of smal Ee Wedbeedeyi October x . Research Report - Consumers Want Sinaller Not Larger, Cabbages Contrary to the usual trend in 3 search, scientists at Cornell University ; trying to produce smaller, rather th; larger, heads of cabbage. Thats what co sumers want, they say, according to | study of buying habits at the marke place, One way a ae smaller cabb: heads, the Cornell scientists say, is. te to keep the heads from growing too large, Accordingly, experiments have recently heads. Results so far show that maximur yields are obtained when two square feet are allowed per planteither 16 inch between the plants in 18-inch rows, or 1: inches between plants in 24-inch rows. The Cornell researchers point o that mechanical problems may arise i switching to the new spacing method sc that row spacing may have to be deter mined by the adaptability of equipmen such as transplanters, cultivators, spay ers, and tractors. s os Consolidated Report Sale Of Leaf Tobacco Of Warehouses For 1959, ae i BEGINNING JULY 23rd ANDENDING AUGUST 21st, 1959.
