Farmers Bulletin Commissioner South Hol The Key me Our Requirement By J. K. VESSEY Southern Regional Forester US 8. Forest Service x ae is Jeading the nation in tree pl ting. This last year alone, more than I e? Will there be markets ia? pulpwood, n ber, and Js wood ey eration or soa Le short time in e life of a quality sawtimber tree. It is generally conceded that our na- tions demand for wood products will double within the next forty years, and that the needed increase in tree growth _ must come from the South. The antici- pated 100 per cent increase in demand for forest products in 40 years will be a result of two factors: (1) A modest in- crease in per capita consumption of wood, rom 78 cubic feet in 1952, to 82 cubic feet in year 2000, and (2) A tremendous increase in populationtrom todays 180 - million people to 225 million 15 years hence and to 330 million by the year - 2000. Confidence in the growing demand for wood products can be based on simple arithmeticthe requirements of people _ to maintain an increasingly high standard ee living times s oe number of ets look then at where the supply t come from, Why is it apparent that the S eek must yeas nearly half of the ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, 1960 FUTURE F NUMBER 4g REST NEE This supply is coming from trees that are hundreds, even thousands, of years old. However, these old-growth forests are steadily being converted to second-growth forests. The day will come, in a genera- tion or two, when these western forests can supply only what they can grow. When this time comes, there is only 25 per cent of the nations forest land in the West on which to grow annual crops of wood. Three-quarters of our commercial forest growing land is east of the Great Plains. The South, and Georgia particularly, is endowed with the factors which make it a potentially high wood production re- gion. It has the topography and soil, much of it best suited and in some cases only suited to growing forest crops, It is in an: area of abundant rainfall, with long growing seasons and hot summers which result in tremendously fast tree growth. It should be crystal clear that from the South must come much of the wood that will be needed by this nation in the years ahead. The challenge to Georgia and the South is clear. We are only now getting a good Agricultural CALENDAR August 6, Kensington North Georgia Hereford Tour. Show at 2 p. m., tle m. start on our long delayed forestry and wood production job. We need to plant even more trees. We need to put millions of acres of woodlands that are now unders stocked and in poor condition under the kind of management that will double, treble, and even quadruple their present rate of wood growth. The steps we take today will insure a continuing expansion of our forest pro- ducts industry. In 1950, there were six pulp and paper mills in Georgia. Today there are 12, either in production or planned. They are here because their basic raw material is here. The growth and expansion of the wood using indus- tries is predicated on there being plenti- ful supplies of wood. -Wood is the universal raw material, It is a renewable natural resource which will eventually be substituted for non- renewable resources as they are consum- ed. Trees, properly established, protect- ed, treated, harvested, and sold is a cash crop that will put money in the woodland owners pocket, attract industry, expand the economy of Georgia, and provide fi- ber and other valuable benefits for this and future generations. New Hybrid Bermuda Developed For Lawns A new hybrid Bermuda grass for lawns and golf fairways has been devel- oped by Dr. Glenn W. Burton, principal geneticist, Georgia Coastal Plain Experi- ment Station, Tifton. Tifway Bermuda appears to be equal or superior to Tifgreen and Tiffine in all characteristics except softness, This stiffness should result in better resistance to sod webworm, which damages Tif- green, Tifway spreads faster than Tif- green and has a darker color making it a good choice for a lawn grass. A foundation nursery was established at the Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station in 1959 for certified growers.
