Georgia arke Commissioner Vorume as a aceieaeeneeeaneneenenemmmmmmntat Harvesting Procedure Of Major Imporfance By J. FRANK McGILL _ Extension Agronomist - Peanuts eather can be reduced if growers will follow certain procedures in harvesting. __ Where peanut vine growth is heavy, Use a rotary mower to clip off peanut = tops two to four (but not more) days be- ore digging. Do not clip more than the op one-third of Spanish and other bunch es and the top one-half of runners. lipping off leafy vine tops helps pea- windrow dry quicker and more ~ Uniformly. It also reduces the load mov- _ ing through the peanut combine, Proper adjustment and operation of igger blades and shaker helps to avoid excessive soil and rocks in peanuts. Pea- _hut digger blades should be sharp enough eB to cut tap root just below area of nuts and adjusted relatively flat. A dull blade set with too much pitch will very likely drag peanuts from vines, _ If digger blades have functioned pro- ie it is easier to adjust shaker height to permit only a soil combing action of the teeth without dragging shaker bars _ through the soil. __ It is strongly recommended that the _ Shaker-windrower be equipped with a heavy drag bar. Its purpose is to firm and | smooth the soil bed under the windrow so | that less soil and rocks will be picked up in combining. It will also help to reduce ] damage to peanuts particularly if adverse _ Weather is encountered. _._ Windrowing rods should be adjusted _ to form a loose, fluffy windrow about the _ width to suit the combine to be used. If a space windrows so that neither ractor nor combine wheels will crack _ and break open pods which lowers grade _ and attracts insect infestation. _ Teshake peanuts in windrow within two _ days after digging and windrowing. This 4s particularly true if digging was done _ under damp soil, thick vines, or if grass _ prevented a good first shaking. Quality of peanuts for market or for a Georgia EMPIRE STATE OF THE SOUTH ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 1960 . NUMBER 47 - Peanut losses due to bad harvesting It is often of considerable advantage to BAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI ANUT HARVEST TIME TIPS seed may be greatly reduced if peanuts are exposed to direct sunlight in wind- rows until completely dry. Probabilities of damage to peanuts due to unfavorable harvesting weather also increases the long- er peanuts are left to dry in windrow. It is, therefore, recommended that peanuts be combined from the windrow in a semi- dry state as soon as they will rattle slight- _ ly when handled, or as soon after digging as conditions will permit efficient use of the harvester. Operate picking equipment at speeds and capacities no higher than those re- commended by the manufacturer. This not only affects yield and grade but loose shelled and damaged kernels invite in- sect infestation. Thorough cleaning of combine, truck and wagon bodies, bins, and sacks just before harvest time will also help to reduce insect damage in stored peanuts. ARTIFICIAL DRYING Peanuts harvested semi-dry should be artificially dried to an average moisture ~ Agricultural CALENDAR July 23-26, Savannah - Annual Convention of Georgia Feed Association. _ duly 26-29, Valdosta - Naval Stores Camp. Drying air tems perature should not exceed 100 degrees F Temperatures exceeding 100 degrees F. and too rapid drying may adversely affect flavor of peanuts when processed. Such peanuts are usually subject to ex- cessive breakage when shelled. Germi- nation of seed may also be reduced. If peanuts are dried in bulk by use of one-way heated air system, they should not be placed in depths greater than 4 feet No portion of a lot of peanuts should be dried, either in windrows or by artificial means, to below 7 percent moisture content (wet basis). Damaging characteristics in shelling such as seed- coat slippage also appear to be associated with the LOWEST moisture content to which peanuts were dried at any time even though moisture is higher at time of shelling, Contact your County Agent for more detailed information on peanut harvest- ing and drying procedures.
