The present military milk purchasing program results not only in an inferior grade product but in a tremendous waste of taxpayer money. If the armed services insist upon using such an inferior pro- duct they should have their cooks mix water and powdered milk in the armed services kitchens rather than pay fancy prices to have someone else mix it for them. I have take appropriate action against the Georgia concerns perpetuating this fraud on the Federal government and I have asked Sen. Richard Russell, chair- man of the Senate Armed Services Com- mittee and Rep. Carl Vinson, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, to investigate this ridiculous government procedure in purchasing milk . In addition I would suggest to the armed services that if they plan to con- tinue their present milk purchasing pro- gram they should set up some kind of inspection program to protect themselves similar to that program we administer in protecting the citizens of Georgia. BIDS PAY Harold Baxter, Forestry marketing specialist, Agricultural Extension Ser- vice, reports a recent survey of timber stumpage sales shows that where more than one bid was obtained, each addition- ai bid resulted in an increase of $1.25 per | thousand board feet in the sale price. - Ceorgia, First: _ @ BROILERS @ PROTECTED FOREST LANDS @ PIMENTO PEPPER - @ PEANUTS @ IMPROVED PECANS Farmers Warned Of Crofolaria In Corn The Georgia Feed Association has be- come quite concerned about the presence of toxic crotolaria in shelled corn design- ed for use as livestock feed. Will L. Kinard, secretary and treasur- er of the Georgia Feed Association Says that within the past few years the greater use of combines in harvesting corn has resulted in crotolaria seed becoming a special problem as combines harvest the crotolaria seed along with the corn. Feed manufacturers can not use corn that contains crotolaria because -crotolaria seed are toxic to livestock. As a result farmers selling corn for feed purposes must either try to prevent crotolaria from contaminating corn or have the corn cleaned before selling it. Kinard says the problem of crotolaria seed in corn has become acute with Geor- gia feed manufacturers. He emphasizes that Georgia feed manufacturers want to buy Georgia corn but they must be as- sured of a quality product they can use and the presence of crotolaria seed makes corn unfit for their use. : The Agricultural Extension Service has now embarked on an educational cam- paign through county agents to familia- rize farmers with the problem and assist them in their efforts to halt contamina- tion of feed grains by crotolaria seed. Farmers are now being urged not to plant corn on land growing crotolaria and to stop planting crotolaria entirely so as to prevent its spread to clean fields. They are advised to have combined corn pro- cessed at a seed cleaning plant, to use Hart Scour Kleen attachments on corn combines and use seed cleaning equip- ment with all husker shellers. Georgia experiment stations are now conducting research projects to determine the best means for eradicating crotolaria in corn fields. It is estimated there are some 31,000 acres in southcentral and Southeast Geor- gia now contaminated with crotolaria. All farmers growing corn for use in livestock feed will save themselves a lot of trouble if they will see to it that the grain is not contaminated with crotolaria. @ NAYAL STORES By EB i 4 +s i > a PAGE TWO | a [SPH NAA aa PHIL CAMPBELL RGIA MARKET BULLETIN Editorial and Executive Offices State Agricultur 19 Hunter Street.
