Farmers Commissioner R. NK McGILL, Extension Agronomist ahi-l, a comparatively new hybrid that outyields Starr, will be avail- orgia farmers this year, pro- speak to their seed dealers seed will be priced several ; per pound higher than Starr but Bee as dditional cost will be repaid ent more storage (based on clipping ests) that the old common cattail millet. Much of this increase over common is its high production late in the nerous tobis across:the South show ahi-1 millet starts off faster in the ig, recovers faster when grazed or od and yields considerably more for- oer acre per year than Starr millet. t as leafy as Starr millet and there- ay not be quite as high in forage . Since Gahi-1 grows taller than tarr millet, it may be a little more dif- alt to manage when used for grazing. nder actual grazing conditions in 957, research workers at the Tifton Sta- yn, found Gahi-1 millet equal to Starr when oe S milk producing Jer- 1 1956 and 1957. In these tests, produced an average of 4647 it s of total digestible nutrients per S. Gay and Sons of Jenkins Coun- md second place State winners in gias Grazing System and Feed Pro- in 1959, _ Peport they WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 1960 NUMBER 29 MEW HYBRID MILLET Gahi-1 millet is adapted through- ality and better in overall produc- were well pleased with Gahi-1 millet planted last year. They said the Gahi-1 was planted about one week after Starr, but the Gahi-1 was ready to green chop two weeks ahead of the Starr. Gene Grimes, Jenkins County Agent says that the Gays especially like Gahi-1 high production for green chop meth- od of feeding and are planning to plant fifty acres of Gahi-1 millet this year. At the Coastal Plain Experiment Sta- tion in 1957, over 20 tons per acre of silage was harvested from a well ferti- lized field of Starr millet that had been grazed to a limited extent. Starr millet Silage is generally not equal to corn sil- age but a number of farmers report satis-- factory results from it. If you like Starr millet silage, you should try Gahi-1 for this purpose, How it will compare with Starr in quality is not known but it will unquestionably produce a greater ton- nage per acre. -Gahi-1 cattail millet should be plant- | ed in cultivated rows for best results. Ten pounds of good seed per acre in 30 to 36-inch rows has given good stands in a well prepared seedbed. Ration grazing should be practiced. Second generation Gahi-1 cattail a _let seed, like such seed from hybrid corn, will yield much less. Therefore, farmers should not try to save seed from fields planted to this commercial hybrid. Plant certified seed to insure that high quality, first generation seed. New Corn Variety A new corn hybrid, Georgia 102, may soon become popular among Georgia farmers. The variety was approved re- cently by the Georgia Experiment Sta- tion, Experiment, Ga., for planting by Georgia farmers, Dr. G. A. Lebedeff and S. V. Stacy, agronomists at the experiment station who conducted research on the hybrid, report that Georgia 102 has good grain quality, good husks, good resistance to earworm, and fair resistance to weevil. Requirements Lowered On Cofton Germination Georgia cotton farmers were remind- ed again this week that they might have to plant cotton seed of lower germina- tion this year because of a shortage of high germinating seed. Under state law the minimum germi- nation requirement for cotton seed sold in Georgia is 70 percent but this has been _ lowered to 60 percent to help overcome the shortage of good seed. Farmers must try to obtain the best seed they can but in the event they must plant seed of lower germination they are reminded that they will have to increase their seeding rate in order to get a good stand. The minimum requirements on cotton seed germination were lowered after seed tests in the State Seed Laboratory as well as reports from throughout the in- dustry revealed the shortage of higher germinating seed. Peanut Price Props Increased For 1960 The U. S. Department of Agriculture has increased the average peanut support price for 1960 by $7.74 a ton over last year. As a result the price support on 1960 crop peanuts will be available at a minimum national average of $201.24 per ton. The increase is a direct result of ef- forts put forth by representatives of the Georgia Agricultural Commodities Au- thority and the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation in cooperation with the Ala- bama Peanut Producers Association and peanut industry representatives from other states.
