Phil Campbell, Commissioner ulletin d Explains Causes rs Note: Last year many ia farmers reported fertilizer esulting in poor crop stands. t years farmers have switch- the use of higher analysis fer- Ss and are using heavier fertili- ive not changed their meth- ' fertilizer placement. The fol- s article on fertilizer injury and and dried out. FERTILIZER SALTS CAUSE IZER BURN? VENT F - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 2, 1960 NUMBER 28 ERTILIZER INJURY applications but at the same time - causes it should be of interest lizer injury is caused by a high tration of soluble fertilizer salts e seed. When the concentration of r salts in the soil solution sur- he roots.of the young plant is nough, the plant is unable to take m the soil. In fact, water is m the plant causing a symptom rtilizer injury. The plant ooks like it has been placed tilizer salts differ. greatly in their ricultural LENDAR of Ga., Athens Ninth annual 8, ABAC, Tifton Land Apprecia- and Judging Short Course. Coastal Plain Experiment Station, ton Inspection of Sale Bulls - Gain uation Test Program. i Coastal Plain Experiment Station, = Sale of Gain Evaluation Test effect on the concentration of the soil so- lution. Phosphate is slowly soluble and moves very slowly from the point. of placement. Therefore, generally phos- phate does not cause fertilizer injury. _Potash and nitrogen on the other hand are quite soluble and move readily in the soil, Nitrate nitrogen since it is not at- tached to the soil particles moves more readily than ammonia nitrogen. The potash and nitrogen in a fertili- zer analysis are the two fertilizer salts that generally cause fertilizer injury. WEATHER CONDITION A FACTOR Soil water movement is largely in a _ vertical direction and for a given set of weather conditions the extent of move- ment up and down will be influenced by soil texture. There is a greater movement of fertilizer salts up and down in a sandy- type soil than in a heavier clay-type soil. Therefore, the same concentration of fer- tilizer salts under the same weather con- _ ditions will more likely cause fertilizer injury in a sandy-type soil than on a clay-type soil. As the soil dries out, the concentration of the soil solution is increased, soil water moves upward by capillary movement, and the fertilizer salts (nitrogen and pot- __ ash) move with it. In some instances they may be deposited on the surface just above the fertilizer band. This may be seen as a white deposit. Rain immediate- ly after planting followed by a long dry period is conducive to upward salt move- ment, Fertilizer injury is therefore more likely to occur under these weather con- ditions. With considerable rain the solu- ble salts tend to move downward again, RATE AND FERTILIZER ANALYSIS A FACTOR In the past Georgia farmers have used fertilizers low in nitrogen and. potash, such as 3-9-6 and 4-8-6, and at relatively low per acre rates, Therefore, placement of fertilizer was not too important. How- ever, with the increased use of high ana- lysis fertilizer, such as 5-10-15 and-4-12- 12, and with higher per acre rates ferti- lizer placement is of critical importance to Georgia farmers, In order to avoid fertilizer injury, high | analysis fertilizers must be placed at least two inches away and two inches below the seed. FERTILIZER APPLIED AS FOLIAR SPRAYS The main practical purpose of apply- ing fertilizer in solution as a spray to the leaves is to quickly overcome some par- ticular mineral deficiency which, if al- lowed to go uncorrected, would effect the growth or yield of the plant. Under most conditions however, spray applications should be supplemented by soil applica- tions. Fertilizer chemicals applied as sprays are generally much more quickly absorbed and utilized by the leaves than when they are applied to the soil. To be most effective, spray applications must be repeated at short intervals of time when the plants are growing. Generally, repeated spray applications should be made at intervals from two to three weeks. Spray applications of fertilizer ma- terials have generally been confined to application of trace minerals. Since the trace elements are required by plants in relatively small amounts, foliar applica- tions may be practically used where there is a known deficiency of trace ele- ments. Concentrated amounts of fertilizer elements applied as a spray can be in- jurious to the plant; therefore, it is neces- sary to apply diluted amounts of fertilizer at any one time when using foliar appli. cations, When sufficient amounts of mixed fertilizer are applied at planting and adequate supplementary nitrogen is used there is no practical reason for using a spray application of fertilizer on most crops.
