Strayhorn, Rt. 1, Gaines- FEED & GRAIN cation. The program to eradicate screw worms has, without a doubt, been one of the most successful programs ever carried out by government officials in behalf of farmers. Just three years ago it was estimated that screw worms cost farmers of the Southeast some $20 mil- lion annually and as late as 1957 an average of 40,000 screw worm cases were reported monthly in the Southeast. During the first three months of the eradication program in Georgia, from April through June 30 of 1958, more than 40 million sterile flies were drop- ped in South Georgia. The program was | so effective from the very beginning that the number of screw worm cases, totaling in the thousands during 1957, totaled only two during 1958. Over the Southeast as a whole, dur- ing 1958 an average of 48 million sterile screw worm flies were dropped every week from April through Decem- ber. At times the weekly drop totaled over 70 million, There were an average of 90 individual airplane flights per week averaging 480 hours of flying time and covering an average of 84,400 square miles. During the 17 months the program was in progress, 1958 and 1959, nearly three billion screw worm flies were reared, sterilized and released. The screw worm. eradication pro- gram is an outstanding example of co- operation between farmers, veterinarians, county, state and federal agricultural workers. In this same spirit of coopera- tion I am confident that we can protect ourselves from reinfestation by this troublesome pest. 15 tons Coastal Bermuda hay, highly fertilized, cured without rain, $25 ton.
