S. partment of Agriculture under the sent administration is that the right land never seems to know what the left and is doing. Figures and so-called facts released by ther in such a manner as to foster further v Iderment on the part of the public. A prime example of such befuddled bling occurred during the recent an- convention of the National Associa- of State Departments of Agriculture Nashville, Tennessee. | an address before the nation s Com- ers, Secretaries, and Directors of ulture, True D. Morse, Under Secre- 0: Agriculture and president of the nmodity Credit Corporation stated as ows: Farmers were never in a stronger fi- cial position. Farm families are making steady gress. Higher incomes, higher levels ing, record high farm ownership, highs in. value of assets and net h, are some of the measurements ch show the progress of farmers. Farmers will continue to make pro- in 1960. Authorities expect the year to set new all-time highs for the my. That means more jobs, more mer income, and more buying of productsespecially the high level items like meat, milk and eggs. Mr. Morse made the above statements October 22. Nine days later, on Octo- er 31, the U. S. Department of Agricul- lt eleased figures which were reported the Associated Press as follows: he Agriculture Department report- WEDNESDAY, ae 9, 1959 NUMBER OF : FACT FUMBLING he Department often conflict with each ed Friday that prices of farm products de- clined nearly 1 2/3 percent between mid- September and mid-October, The decline put farm product prices at the lowest level since August 1940, in comparison with the level of prices paid by farmers for items used in production and family living. The two conflicting reports indicate _ that either Mr. Morse or the Associated Press were in error. It is extremely un- likely that the Associated Press, with its record for accuracy, was in error. Whatever Mr. Morses intention, his _ talk brought a wave of criticism from the State Commissioners, Secretaries, and Di- rectors of Agriculture attending the meet- ing at Nashville. As a result of Mr. Morses statement and the USDA release it would appear that either Mr. Morse did not have all the facts or deliberately attempted to conceal the facts. In any case, it is deplorable when an Under Secretary of Agriculture, in a major address before state agricultural leaders, speaks in such a manner as to mislead the public as to the true plight of - our farm population. FEED ADDITIVES. = BOOST PIG-GAINS Feed additives in starter rations fed to pigs four to eight weeks of age produced gains that averaged 11.6 to 47.6 per cent faster than those pigs fed a regular ra- tion in trials at South Dakota State Col- 7 : lege. A combination of streptomycin-sulfa- quinoxaline gave the fastest and most efficient gains. Fhe rate of gain was 39.5 per cent better than with the basal ration | at the 50-gram level and 46.5 per cent : faster at the 100-gram level. A ration containing erythromycin had an average gain of from 13.2 to 28.3 per cent faster than the control lot. Aureomy-_ cin at the 100-gram level produced a 35.8 per cent increase in daily gain. A combi- nation of aureomycin and _ erthromycin gave no improvement over a single anti- biotic. Furazolidone, a nitrofuran pronuck in-. creased gains by 14.3 per cent. A combi- nation of furazolidone and aureomycin in- creased gains 38 per cent. Feed efficiency was boosted from 11.6 to 27.6 per cent in- various tests.
