Farmers ark -. Pa Campbell, Commissioner letin | - Tobacco Is Halted - On Infested Land By PHIL CAMPBELL Commissioner of Agriculture Because of the serious threat of Black obacco in Georgia it has become neces- lisease. 7 | Under the quarantine regulations re- ommended by a special committee of the .egislature appointed to study the prob- em, tobacco production will be tempora- ly discontinued on all land in Georgia own to be infested with Black Shank. nfested land, either beds or fields, be planted to non-susceptible crops a period of not less than five years. rms having infested land and not suf- ntly large enough to practice such a ation program but topographically apted to prevent contamination of oth- nd may continue tobacco production ion-infested land selected by inspec- from the Department of Agriculture. ures to guard against the spread of this QUARANTINE 08 WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1959 NUMBER 12 shank disease to the production of quality ary for me to establish quarantine mea- Agricultural CALENDAR Nov. 20-26, National Farm-City Week. Nov. 29-Dec. 1, Henry Grady Hotel, At- lantaGeorgia Association of Soil Conservation District Supervisors. Under such conditions, however, only dis- ease resistant varieties may be planted. In addition to the regulations on land use, all machinery used in custom work (tobacco harvesters, sprayers, transplan- ters, fumigation equipment, irrigation equipment, etc.) will be allowed to enter and leave infested farms only with the consent of area inspectors. In addition such machinery must be cleaned and sprayed with fungicides under the direc- tion of the inspectors. Area inspectors will also have author- ity over the movement of animals to and from infested fields and farms and author- ity over the movement of labor as well as the use of irrigation water from common sources in infested areas and the produc- tion of susceptible plants on infested farms. gs All susceptible plants produced on in- = fested farms must be used only on that farm on which they are produced and plant beds must be destroyed as soon as possible after production. I have written all farmers on whose : farms Black Shank has been found and sent each of these farmers a copy of the _ : quarantine regulations. a Needless to say, I regret that the in- S : festations of Black Shank have increased to the point where we have to take such measures. These regulations are going to require a great deal of work on the part of | . the Department and possibly impose some hardship on the tobacco farmer. But tobacco specialists are firm in their conviction that we have no other choice, | Georgia has always enjoyed a reputation for producing some of the finest flue- cured tobacco in the nationa reputation | that has resulted in favorable prices at. marketing time. os We must work to preserve this repu- _ tation and save our tobacco industry. I earnestly solicit the cooperation of every __ tobacco farmer in Georgia as we launch _ plans to check and control the spread of this devastating tobacco disease.
