By J.B. PRESTON Extension AgronomisiTobacco _ Any Georgia tobacco grower can pro- duce good tobacco plants in time for trans- planting. This is true in spite of unfavora- _ble weather conditions and disease prob- lems during some years, If all recommendations are followed, success is usually assured regardless of weather conditions, diseases, or insects. In 1960 it will be even more important to set the Georgia crop with plants grown on the farm because of the increased oc- currence of BLACK SHANK, ANGULAR LEAF SPOT, and VIRUS DISEASES; all of which can be brought onto the farm with tobacco plants. In the long run, growers wil find it safer and more economical to grow plants rather than to depend on other sources. - The following practices are suggested for the production of good plants. 1. Select a sunny location that is pro- tected from cold and can be properly drained. 2. Provide facilities for watering when necessary. 3. Prepare a good seed bed early so that it will be well settled. : oe 4. Use a material or materials that will (Continued on. Page 4) all the newly-eligible markets. Previously, before the act was amended by Congress last year, the : Packers and Stockyards Act required posting of markets of 20,000 or a square feet only. Now that all public markets doing in | terstate business are subject to the act, - 4 the U.S. Department of Agriculture is. extending its posting program to cover The posting of a livestock market | or G sales barn under the Packers and Stock- yards Act means that a livestock producer receives the benefits of several services _ and features favorable to him. One is accurate weights. The. market : operator must install, maintain and Op= erate scales in such a way as to assure cor- rect weights, Another is protection-of funds. All marketing agencies and dealers at a posted market are obligated to be registered with the U. S. Department of. Agriculture and bonded in an amount | based on the volume of business. Another feature is full and accurate : accounting. Farmers selling livestock at a posted market must be paid promptly a and be furnished with a true and full ac- counting of all the facts connected with the sale. Still another feature of the act requires reasonable and adequate facili- ties and nondiscriminatory rates. Markets _ must have such facilities as suitable pens and unloading docks and provide enough good feed and water to avoid excessive : shrinkage. Lee The Act also requires ihe sale of Ke: x stock under open competitive conditions. It prohibits any unfair, deceptive, un- justly discriminatory or monopolistie s practice which would prevent the farmer from receiving full value for his livestock, In addition all dealers and buyers operates = _ (Continued on Ls 4) Geo: rgia :MP E STATE OF THE SOUTH | aioe BAST oF ae MISSISSIPPI se OTP Tener. center stern: - Georgia, ae e BROILERS e PROTECTED FOREST LANDS & PIMENTO PEPPER a - @ PEANUTS @ IMPROVED PECANS @ NAVAL STORES E ORGIA | State Agriculture Building 18 Hunter Street, S.W. s Atlania 3, Georgia Phone JAcksen 4-3$292 MARKET BULLETIN xecutive Offices PHIL CAMPBELL requests to be changes of address, Market Bulletin, change of address must include OLD and NEW addresses.
