Fossil Evidence Reveals Antiquity Of Corn Reprint from CORN INDUSTRIES RE- ) SEARCH FOUNDATION, Inc., / Newsletter , : The fossil evidence is sensational in its revelation of the antiquity of corn, and of _ the virtually changeless nature of corn pollens over hundreds of centuries. A number of pollen grains were iso- lated from a drill core taken from a depth of 200 feet below Mexico City. This pollen was identified by.Dr. Elso Barghoorn, of Harvard, as that of corn, which has the largest pollen of any know grass. Although the drill core containing the pollen was assigned to the last integlacial period and therefore probably at least 80,- 000 years old, the fossil pollen is scarcely distinguishable in size, shape and other features from modern corn pollen. In Bat Cave, New Mexico, under lay- ers of centuries-old debris, a few tiny cobs of prehistoric corn were recovered, On the basis of radiocarbon determination, ' these corncobs (about as long as a penny LARGEST STATE EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI is wide) are estimated to be 5600 years old. To Dr. Mangelsodorf and his associ- ates they posed another question: how could such a corn have evolved into the ~ modern dent varieties, even in 5600 years? seed freezing treatment followed by a hot water treatment. The use of gibberellic acid on the seed has no effect on germina- tion rate, regardless of heat treatment. Peale First: @ BROILERS @ PROTECTED FOREST LANDS @ PIMENTO PEPPER @ PEANUTS @ IMPROVED PECANS E RYE IS ADAPT ura NUMBER. a a - Rye Sometimes Misbranded, . Choose Strains Carefully = By J. FRANK McGILL Extension Agronomist The word Abruzzi on your rye seed % tag does not necessarily mean its adapted __ to Georgia conditions. Delaware Abruzzi ag well as many other Abruzzi strains oe . coming from areas north of Georgia give only poor to fair yields of forage when grown in Georgia. Wrens Abruzzi and Gator are adapted Georgia Certified rye varieties. Rye may also be misbranded. Last fall samples of rye were planted at the Georgia Experiment Stations by Dr. D. D. Morey and Dr. U. R. Gore. These sam- ples were drawn by seed inspectors of the State Department of Agriculture from eS ryes being offered for sale to Georgia : farmers. Eight per cent were misbranded, 7 while 8 per cent more were considered undesirable. Some of those mislabeled | were extreme winter types such as Rosen and Balbo and produce low yields of for- age throughout most of the state. Twenty- Aes five per cent were found misbranded in 1955 and 17 per cent in 1957. = Certified rye is your best guarantee this fall for securing adapted rye seed, Where this is not possible, secure Gator rye or Abruzzi strains which have per- formed well in your locality. AGING POULTRY IMPROVES TENDERNESS, TESTS PROVE Aging poultry at least 12 hours before a freezing it improved tenderness in re- _ cent research by USDRs Western utili- zation division, Albany, California, and other agencies. Moreover, the showed that birds aged before being cut | up were more tender than those aged af-_ terward. Severe scalding {hove 125F.and mechanical picking both interfere with normal tenderizing, but tenderness will not be harmed in machine picking if beat- ing is minimized. Tenderization proceeds ue se at 27F but virtually stops at zero. @ NAVAL STORES studies PAGE TWO GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN _ Editorial and Executive Offices State Agriculture Building 19 Hunter Street, S.W.
