Farmers ae WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 1989 erin antrol Of Woody fs Is Probed tive and economical control of irable woody plants without damage e, one of the major management ms in growing pine in the South, is d through cooperative research on al spraying by the U. S. Department \griculture and Louisiana State Uni- ity. | Fred A. Peevy of USDAs Agricultural rch Service, and Paul Y. Burns of isiana State, found the most effective tment for hardwood control was with w volatile ester of 2, 4, 5-T, applied in oil-water emulsion at the rate of five ions per acre in the late spring. By the emulsion contained ten per- a 4, 5-T. Ata cost of $7.50 to $9 per acre at pres- | rices, the treatment gives effective ol of blackjack oak, post oak, black nd sweetgum. It provides fair to good ol of red oak and blackgum; fair con- f hickory and white oak; and poor : 1 of red maple and water oak, f low volatile ester of silvex, some- es used by growers for hardwood con- was found to be less effective than , and black oak. In comparable tests three other chemi- 8 gave poorer control than either 2, 4, or silvex, : etter kill is obtained on ridges and pes than in creek bottoms because the re susceptible species such as some ss and sweetgum, are commonly d on ridges and the more resistant in bottoms. g 100d control of susceptible species is tained regardless of size or crown class. icidal damage to the pines is negligi- 0 Agricultural CALENDAR July 1, Dawsonville; July 2, Americus: July 7, Moultrie; July 8, Millen: J uly 9, Madison; July 10, Morrow F ertilizer Conferences, July 10-14, Savannah Georgia Feed Association Convention : anaes Sete Raye ee r = + RENNES Research Report 4, 5-T on sweetgum, blackgum, white New Snap Bean Variety Announced by USDA The USDA now Peodnces that a new variety of snap bean, called Tendercrop, has been released to seed growers, and that enough seed should be available for commercial distribution to growers and home gardeners after the 1959 crop sea- son. The USDA scientists who developed Tendercrop report that it is resistant to common bean mosaic, New York 15 mo- saic, and to pod mottle, a relatively new virus disease in the U. S. The new variety was tested in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Delaware, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Florida over a period of three growing seasons and gave an aver- age yield of 9,390 pounds per acre, com- pared with 7,130 pounds for Improved Tendergreen, and 9,955 for Topmost. Tendercrop is well adapted to mechan- ical harvesting the scientists say, because the pods are borne high and are heavily concentrated on the outside and upper parts of the plant. According to Willis Huston, engineer, Agricultural Extension Service, where ponds depend largely upon watershed runoff, a minimum of 1.5 acre feet of water should be impounded for each acre to be irrigated. An acre foot of water, Hu- ston points out, is water a foot deep over an acre. : EN pistictea TRE A NUMBER 44 v Advisory Board Approves : Later Opening Date By PHIL CAMPBELL _ Commissioner of Agriculture The opening date for flue. cure fe bacco sales in Georgia this year will be Thursday, July 23. a This date was approved by a vote of the majority of the members of the State Advisory Tobacco Board attending a spe= cial meeting of the board held in my office this past Friday. 3 eS _ With this approval and recommenda- _ : . tion from the board, I immediately issued an order setting July 23 as the date fo opening tobacco sales. For the first time since the present law concerning opening of tobacco mar- kets was passed by the legislature, there are actually two different crops of tobac- co in Georgia. oe at Due to unusual weather conditions, crop harvest has varied considerably in different sections of the state and although some tobacco will be ready early, a large quantity of tobacco will not be ready for market before July 23. | ae ae Individual members of the State To- bacco Advisory Board, whether in favor of a July 16 or a July 23 opening date, oo were completely sincere in their opinions as to which was the best date. The crop in some members survey areas will be ready for a July 16 opening where in other areas the crop will not be ready. The most important question that had to be answered in setting the opening date was which opening date would do the least financial damage to tobacco - ie = farmers in Georgia. Would those farmers whose tobacco is ready for the market to open on July 16 be hurt more financially or less financi- ally should the opening be delayed until July 23 than would those farmers not Z ready for the July 16 date should the mar- ket open at that time? All available information indicated clearly that a July 23 opening would do less financial damage to Georgia tobacco farmers than an earlier date. Many tobacco farmers called or wrote me concerning the opening of sales in Georgia this year and 90 percent of those contacting me favored the July 23 open- ing date. - Georgia EMPIRE STATE OF THE SOUTH @ LARGEST STATE EAST OF THB MISSISSIPPI PONT : POOR 6 & Georgia, First: @ BROILERS @ PROTECTED FOREST LANDS @ PIMENTO PEPPER @ PEANUTS @ IMPROVED PECANS @ NAVAL STORES es CS PAGE TWO SSS Sa TN Executive Offices _ [GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN "Pachson ttiee MEMBER APPERTALE and appurtenances admissible Notices of farm produce under postage regulations in serted one time on each te- quest.
