GCoorgia Farmers ill Appropriates Fear or Research In Georgia _ By PHIL CAMPBELL Commissioner of Agriculture Georgia Senator Richard B. Russell ucceeded in getting an agricultural it Georgia agriculture in many re- he total measure for four billion dol- ; oes into conference with the House Representatives and then to the Presi- for signature. However, it is expected ass with little or no revision, Under the provisions of this bill $100,- ould go for research on the use of stal Bermuda pellets. The research ud be carried out at the Beat at Tifton. Research to date has indicated that al bermuda pellets can adequately re- ther forms of feed nutrients in lrve- value of coastal bermuda pellets d well result in a huge new livestock idustry based on Coastal Bermuda Commissioner opriation through the Senate that will ck feed mixtures. Continued research NOTICE Meat processing plants, grocery stores and meat markets throughout the state are being warned that it is against state law for them to use preservatives such as sodium sulphite in ground beef or hamburger meat. In the past few months State Depart- ment of Agriculture inspectors have dis- covered what, in some cases, appears to . be a growing use of preservatives to help hold the color in ground beef or hamburger meats. Meat processing plants, grocery stores and meat markets are hereby warned that the use of such preservatives in the future will result in cases being made against persons and businesses using such preservatives: - grass and, as a result, create entirely new -markets for this efficient forage crop. Russells measure also provides $608,- 000 for a new laboratory at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station for research on corn-destroying insects. As Georgia now ranks eleventh in the country in corn pro- duction with the largest crop ever pro- duced in Georgia last year, this research appropriation should prove very beneficial _ to Georgia farmers money-wise. The North Georgia apple farmers will : Phil Campbell, NUMBER 41 benefit by the $25,000 appropriation for research on apples at the Mountain Ex- periment Station at Blairsville. This work will be directed at developing a better strain of apples for Georgia growers asre- = quested by the Georgia Mountain ee a Growers Association, In addition, Russell was able to secure tory at Watkinsville. These experiments an extra $383, 000 for experiments current- 9 ly going on at the soil and water labora- + are designed to step up soil management : research in conservation farming. Funds previously had been secured by s Senator Russell for expansion of the capi- tal investment facilities at this experiment station. The new funds are re-occurring {1 items in the budget for the annual opera-_ tion of new facilities. The Georgia Senator also had inserted 7 a provision setting aside $1,893,000 for boll weevil research throughout the South. This work will mainly - carried out in Mississippi. Important to Georgia waatiry 3 growers, the bill also contains funds for full en- | forcement of the poultry inspection law. Senator Russell is certainly to be com- mended for his efforts in behalf of Geor- gia farmers and agriculture in general. This money should go a long way toward _ strengthening our apricultiiral ese ea each Week In Georgia - June 14 - 20 ARM WORK WANTED Ing man wants job on arm for room, board Wd pay.
