The seed lab is being ed three-fourths by a U. S. Forest ice grant and one-fourth by Forestry ission funds. Seed test requests, which jumped 300-400 in previous years to 1,200 57, made the lab necessary, Forestry mission Director Guyton DeLoach Research will also be conducted at Loach said 15 persons will be able 3,000 seed lots annually, compared the present capacity of 1,200. With good supplies of grass roughage and grain in practically all parts of the country, demand for replace- ment stock, feeders and stockers should continue to bid up the available supply of calveswhich is down again this year for the fourth consecutive year. The four demonstration feeder cattle sales can handle a lot more beef quality calves to advantage. There is no danger of getting more than the buyers will take because larger members of cattle attract more buyers which always helps prices. Large members of feeder-stocker qual- ity cattle are being sold through regular sales that would bring more money if as- sembled in uniform graded groups with enough volume to attract good buyers. We have buyers in the state who handle twenty to forty thousand feeders a year. They want to buy by the car load, not by ones or twos as we force them to do in Georgia. It is time for the producer to look at his marketing and attend one of these Sales. He might also attend special feeder sales like those held regularly at Albany, where large numbers are assembled to attract large buyers. Contact your county agent for more information on livestock marketing. NUMBER 2 BACCO SALES $61,541,380 1958 Average Price Highest In History The average price per pound.of Geor- gia flue cured tobacco was higher in 1959 than ever before. A total of 106,891,560 pounds of tobacco was sold by producers in Georgia this year at an average price of 57.57 cents per pound. The total value of this years Georgia. : : flue cured tobacco sales was $61,541,380.- 83. Last year, an off year for tobacco, the total value was $52,808.682.60 for 93,919,- 967 pounds. The 1957 average was 56.23 cents per pound. The 1958 average was 1.34 cents higher. - This years flue cured crop, although _ larger than the 1957) crop, was produced on.5,000 less acres due to decreased allot- ments and soil bank participation. This years average price per pound for tobacco was almost 10 cents higher than the 1956 average price of 48.46. In Editors Note: On page 4 of this | week's Bulletin is the 1958 final con- \ solidated report of sales of leaf to- \ bacco in Georgia warehouses for the \period beginning July 29 and ending /August 30. Each warehouse is listed / separately with the totals for the sea- son in each city listed. 1956, 149,486,851 pounds of tobacco wera sold for $72, 446, 844.69. The average price per pound of ae bacco has exceeded 50 cents only three times in the history of Georgia tobacco markets. This was in 1953, when the aver- age was 51.51, in 1957 and this year. In 1954, 139,925,534 pounds were sold. by producers at 45.65 cents per pound for a total of $63,871,389.23. In 1955 this fig- ure was _up considerably with a total of 166,978,108 pounds being sold for $78,- 905,205.32, or an average of 47.25 nen per pound. Thirty years ago, in 1928, the total. number of pounds sold in Georgia tobacco markets was 85,727,172 at an average of . 12.78 cents per pound. 1,701,129 pounds of the 1958 crop went into the government stabilization program this year and 464,619 pounds grown out of state went to stabilization.
