Aulbert Brannen of Statesboro says he will reopen the Brannen Warehouse in. Statesboro with a full set of buyers pres- ent next Friday August 29 so that a small percentage of the leaf crop siill in curing houses can be marketed. Georgias tobacco selling season offici- _ ally ended Friday but a few farmers, due to unusual weather conditions and delays in geiting plants at the first of the season, still have some tobacco in the curing sheds. Certainly Mr. Brannen and his associa- tion should be commended for their efforts to help Georgia tobacco farmers dispose of this late tobacco. : PHIL CAMPBELL Commissioner of Agriculture Beef Cattle Gain More When Kept Out Of Mud Purdue Research Proves Beef cattle kept out of the mud will gain extra pounds, When the cattle have . a firm footing they put on more weight _ than when they wade around in muddy yards, according to recent research at = Purdue University. Even a small strip of concrete along- side a feed bunk is beneficial, says Dr. W. M. Beeson and Dr. T. W: Perry of Purdue, In a research trial (using two lots of - 14 steers confined for 112 days) the aver- age gain per steer in the lot with a 16 ft. concrete strip on one side of the feed bunk was 95 pounds compared to only 62 pounds for each steer confined to the un- paved lot. a _Each steer on concrete gained 33 addi- _ tional pounds. The steers in the unpaved lot ate less total feed, but each steer re- quired 35 pounds more feed to make a pound of gain. formance as NUMBER 51. TEST STATION TO OPEN Program To Start At Tifton, October 1 In response to a group of beef cattles men in Georgia, money was made avail- able by Governor Marvin Griffin in 1957 for the construction of a physical plant for _a beef cattle gain evaluation test program, The University of Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations have announced the ~ Se first beef bull gain evaluation test begin- ning October 1, at the Georgia Coastal _ Plain Experiment Station, Tifton. _. There is much variation in the individ- ual performance of beef cattle. Perform- _ ance testing, or gain evaluation, is the measure of an animals individual per- the animals well as ability to transmit those teristics to its offspring. charac- The ability of an animal to transmit rate of gain is highly heritable. Almost without exception, fast gaining animals do so on less pounds of feed per pound of gain than do animals that gain slowly. All types of cattle and all breeds ee among them those that gain faster than the average of their group. The job is to Gain Testing Program Rules And Regulations. Performance testing is a means of finding them. Gain- ing ability of beef cattle should be used - as a culling and selection tool. Steers sired by fast gaining bulls, be- cause they are likely to gain faster, might _mean the difference in a profit or loss in a beef cattle feeding operation whether on pasture or in dry lot or both. Commer- cial cattlemen are looking for bulls with good performance records. The test pro- gram is being well received in the states that have it, All purebred beef cattle breeders in Georgia are urged to take ad- Georgia, First: @ BROILERS @ PROTECTED FOREST LANDS @ PIMENTO PEPPER -@ PEANUTS @ IMPROVED PECANS | _vantage of this program. ~ @ NAVAL STORES a eae ay GE ORGIA MARKET BULLETIN 19 Hunter Atlanta Editoria) and Executive Offices State Agriculture Building Phone JAckson 4-3292 Street, S.W. 3.
