Phil Campbell, Commissioner ulletin purposes in mind: It rs of ie pest idee this i the area. et colony, with the a flies to blunt the ay ne screwworm pro- WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1958 NUMBER 39 THE SCREWWORM FIGHT REPORT SCREWWORM CASES IMMEDIATELY All Georgia farmers are being asked to cooperate in the program designed to _get rid of the screwworm and the co- operation of everyone will be needed if we are to do this job. ' All farmers are urged to report screwworm cases to their county agenis IMMEDIATELY after such cases are discovered. In addition farmers are ask- ed to collect at least 10 of the screw- worms, place them in a small bottle of water and leave them at the county agents office for identification. If you have no county agent in your county contact a county agent in an adjoining _ county. Farmer cooperation will be of great value to us In our efforis to eradicate screwworms in the Southeast. Phil Campbell, Commissioner a test new: equip- a today. Greater control can =| outbreak unless the early occasional in- festations are stamped out. The Screwworm Eradication Program suggests these steps to stockmen: 1. INSPECT ANIMALS FREQUENT- LY. It is necessary to find every case, in- cluding infested animals that hide out. 2. PROMPTLY TREAT WOUNDS WITH APPROVED REMEDIES. EQ-335 and Smear 62 are recommended by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. They may cost a little more than other formu- las but they do the job more effectively. 3. KEEP ANIMALS IN PENS UNTIL _ WOUNDS ARE HEALED. A screwworm- infested wound is highly attractive to egg- laying flies. Treating and releasing an an- | imal may give only temporary relief and fail to reduce the screwworm population. It is important to keep the animals under observation until the wound has healed, to protect the animal and the rest of the herd. 4. REPORT SCREWWORM CASES -TO THE COUNTY AGENT or to State or Federal livestock inspectors. 5. USE BLOODLESS EMASCULA- TORS on cattle, sheep and goats. 6. ALL SURGICAL OR ACCIDENT- eS AL WOUNDS SHOULD BE TREATED, - covered with a smear, and kept under ob- _ servation until healed. _7. PREVENT WOUNDS in animals by keeping all pasture and handling facili- ties in good repair, and by gentle handling _of animals. No Vesicular Exanthema Discovered During 195] No case of the serious swine disease vesicular exanthema (VE) has been found in this country for more than a year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported Less than six years ago, VE was at epidemic proportions, with 42 states re- porting infected swine herds. Although this disease affects only swine, the lesions resemble those of foot-and-mouth disease (which affects cattle, sheep, goats, and swine) and those of vesicular stomatitis. (which affects horses, cattle, sheep, goats -and swine), Since VE is spread chiefly by feeding raw garbage to hogs, Federal officials ate tribute a large part of the victory over this costly disease to the outstanding co- operation of the state in passing garbage- cooking laws. Forty-seven states, many of them in special sessions of their leg- islatures, have passed laws to prohibit the feeding of raw garbage to hogs, Connecti- cut is the only state without such a law. VE was first identified in California in 1934. Quarantines successfully confin- ed the disease to that state until 1952, when it was found in Cheyenne, Wyom- ing. From that point, the disease spread swiftly to other states. At the height of the infection, more than 150,000 hogs were afflicted or had been exposed in a period of one month. In addition to the cooking of garbage before it is fed to swine, the VE eradica- tion program also provided for quaran- tine inspection, prompt disposal of in- fected and exposed hogs, and through dis- infection of all contaminated places. -USDA officials who direct animal dis- ease control work point out that close watch will be maintained and quick ac- tion taken to stamp out any new VE outs breaks, should they appear. (Note: Georgia was one of the first states to take definite steps to eradicate and control vesicular exanthema disease outbreaks, Georgia laws requiring the cooking of all garbage fed to hogs has been most effective. in preventing and controll- ing this disease within the state.) er Georgia, First: PEANUTS FOREST LANDS PIMENTO PEPPER BROILERS NAVAL STORES IMPROVED PECANS Editorial State A GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN pilania %.
