Georgia Farmers arke Phil Campbell, Commissioner Bulletin WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1958 NUMBER 2 34 Counties Infested, - 36,000 Acres Treated (NOTE: Two out-of-state meetings (have been held recently, one at Mem- yphis, Tenn.. and one at Orlando, Fla., which I feel sure will be of interest to (Georgia farmers and agricultural work- \ers, Following is a report on the Mem- FIRE ANT ae CATOOBA 9 WRAY] FANNIN VNION \_ TOWNS RABUN GILMER a & WALKER IicKERS SHEROKEE - FIGHT UNDERWAY phis meeting and the present stage of the fire ant eradication program. Phil Campbell Commissioner By W. E. BLASINGAME State Entomologist C. A. Ward of the Veterinary Division, State Department of Agriculture, recent- ly attended a meeting with me in Mem- phis, Tenn., to study and discuss with U.S.D.A. officials, four pest eradication RE ANT INFESTATION Blacked out counties shown in the map of Georgia above are those counties it which fire ant eradication work is underway. The shaded counties are those in which infestations _jave been discovered and which will be treated in the near future. programs being carried on by the U.S.D.A. and state agricultural agencies. The four eradication programs consid- ered were those dealing with the fire ant, witch weed, soybean cyst nematode and screw worm control. Quarantines are in force in regard to witch weed and the soy- bean cyst nematode, neither of which has been discovered in Georgia, and a fed- eral quarantine is pending on the fire ant. The emergency fire ant eradication project got underway in Georgia on Sep- tember 30, 1957. Major attention was fo- cused on Decatur County which present- ed the most serious problem in the state. In one years time in this county the fire ants have spread from approximately 10,- 000 acres to 75,000. Surveys are now complete on 320,000 acres in Decatur County. Between 75,000 to 100,000 acres will require treatments. Applications are, for the most part, being made by aircraft. To date 32,000 acres have been treated. Work is continuing and should be completed within the next 90 days. The imported fire ant has been intro- duced and spread within the state pri- marily through the movement of infested nursery stock. All nurseries in Georgia that are known to be infested have been treated and nursery stock from other states where imported fire ants are known to occur can enter this state only after certification from quarantine officials that the nursery shipping such plants is free from infestation, It is expected that a federal quarantine will shortly be in effect regulating the interstate movement of articles and products capable of spread- ing this pest. All known infestations have been treated in Macon and Monroe Counties. These were small isolated infestations. All known infested acreage has been treated in Houston, and Oglethorpe Coun- ties but additional surveys are to be con- ducted. Work is nearing completion in Clarke, Jones and Pike Counties. Infesta- tions in these counties involve small acreage. Work is also under way in Eff- ingham, Harris, Henry, Clayton, Crisp, Dodge, Ben Hill, Bibb, Bleckley, Chatham, Chattahoochie, Meriwether, Pierce, Schley, Seminole, Sumter and Spalding Counties.
