The American Farmer degree is the highest level of membership in. the Fu- ture Farmers of America, a national or- ganization of boys studying vocational ag- riculture in high school, The award is based on leadership as well as proficiency in farming. The nominee from Georgia to receive the Star Farmer of America award is Jimmy McMullan of Jefferson. He was Star Georgia Planter in 1954 and served - as state FFA vice president the following year. The 17 Gcseaians recommended for the America Farmer degree are Jappy Akins, Statesboro; Larry Brown, Jimmy NeSmith and William Carter, Sycamore; Kelly C. Harrell, W. H. Miller and Perry Hornsby, Seminole chapter at Donalson- (Continued On Page 8) Treat Diseased Oat Seed To Insure Good Stand Much of the oat seed harvested in Georgia this year is of poor quality and infested with disease organisms (Helm- 4 7 inthosporium victoriae), according to Dr. U. R. Gore, Georgia Experiment Station, Griffin. In order to get the most early grazing and maintain stands, treatment of oat seed is more important than ever this season. Two years results at the Georgia Ex- periment Station from treating good and poor oat seed have been reported by Dr. E. S. Luttrell and Dr. Gore, Ag-Research Briefs for September 1956. Seed treat- ee ment was of great benefit on poor. dis- eased seed, resulting in as much as 250 pereent increase in stand on the early plantings. Seed known to be infested with H. victoriae should be treated to prevent loss of stand due to disease. The earlier the planting for early grazing the greater the importance of using high quality seed and treating the seed. Dust treatment with one-half ounce per bushel of Ceresan M. or liquid Pano- gen have given good results. The liquid treatment is used by commercial treaters. New Bulletin Available On Sheep Production Basic steps in sheep production from establishing the flock to marketing lambs and woolare included in a new bulletin issued by the Agricultural Ex- tension Service, University of Georgia College of Agriculture, Athens. The new bulletin, Sheep Production in Georgia, was written by Denis C. De- Loach, Extension sheep specialist, and R. O. Williams, Extension animal husband- man-project leader. According to Extension Director W. A. Sutton, the bulletin is now available from county agents.
