There are two important changes which go into effect for the 1958 Acreage Reserve Pro- gram, pointed out by John F. Bradley, State Administrative Officer of the Agri- cultural Stabilization Conservation. A Soil Bank base will be established for each farm which participates in the program. The Soil Bank base will be the average of the number of acres of crops produced for harvest for the two years 1956 and 1957. The County ASC Offices throughout the State have a list of the crops which will be considered in estab- lishing the Soil Bank base. A few of these crops are: wheat, cotton, corn, tobacco, peanuts, small grains, grain sorghum, vegetable crops produced for the market, soybeans, and field and canning peas and beans, among others. _ Mr. Bradley stated that before a farm- (Continued On Page 4) sig Of Rye Seed Protects Georgia Farmers = By E. E. WINSTEAD State Seed Analyst For many years, Georgia farmers have been buying rye seed shipped into Geor- gia which was not adapted to growing - conditions in the State. As a result farm- ers planting this seed have had little or no winter grazing. wo Tests at the Georgia Experiment Sta- = tion have shown that abruzzi rye grown in Georgia and South Carolina will give excellent forage yield when used as a . winter grazing crop in Georgia. In 1955, the seed laboratory of the State Department of Agriculture submit- ted 98 samples of ryecollected in seed law enforcementto Dr. D, D. Morey at a the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton and Dr. U. R. Gore at the Georgia . Experiment Station, Griffin, to be grown out for checking the correctness of label- ing as to variety, in order to determine the quality of seed being supplied to Georgia farmers. Of these 98 samples, a total of 45 sam- ples came from states other than Geor- gia and South Carolina, and when the tests were completed in the spring of 1956, a total of 31 of the 98 samples tested were found to be mis-labeled as to variety. In the fall of 1956, the Department of Agriculture seed laboratory submitted 72 samples to be grown out for variety test- ing. Only 14 of these 72 samples were grown outside Georgia and South Caro- lina and of the 72 samples only two were found to be mis-labeled as to variety. Compared to the seed sold in 1955, showing 31.60 percent of the samples mis- labeled, the seed sold in the fall of 1956 showed only 2.80 percent mis-labeling, which indicates that Georgia seedsmen are supplying correctly labeled adapted varieties of rye to the Georgia farmer. Seed inspectors are taking samples at this time from all rye being offered for sale in Georgia and these samples will be grown out at the Experiment Stations this fall in order that we can assure Geor- gia farmers of correctly labeled rye seed.
