The new vaccine is a living, non- spreading vaccine developed by Raymond A. Bankowski, Poultry Pathologist, School of Veterinary Medicine, Davis, California. The vaccine will hold off Newcastle Disease for at least 13 weeks on the first injection and at least 53 weeks on the sec- ond injection. Bankowski says the vaccine can be (Continued On Page 8) Winter Grazing Plans Should Be Made Now More than one million acres of Geor- gia land was in winter grazing last year and by 1965 the number may reach a mil- lion and a half, according to Agronomist J. R. Johnson, Agricultural Extension Service, University of Georgia College of Agriculture. Johnson points out that winter graz- ing should supplement good permanent pastures in any grazing system. Sufficient hay or silage should be on hand for win- ter feeding when the winter grazing is short. Johnson cited the following recom- mendations for planning winter grazing as an important source of feed: ~Prepare land three to five weeks be- fore planting. (Planting time in North Georgia is around September 1, and for South Georgia it is September 15 to Oc- tober 5.) Use heavy rates: of fertilizer, particu- larly nitrogen, at, or soon after planting. Use 400 to 600 pounds of 4-12-12 per acre at planting. If anhydrous ammonia is used, apply 100 pounds of nitrogen at planting. If solid sources of Nitrogen are used, apply 50 pounds per acre at plant- ing or soon afterwards in order to stimu- late early and vigorous growth. A good mixture in North Georgia is three bushels of oats, 20 pounds of rye grass, and 20 pounds of Crimson clover per acre. In South Georgia, four bushels of oats per acre is recommended. On heavier type of soil, Crimson clover, rye grass, or vetch may be used in the oats. Two bushels of Abruzzi or Gator rye will give good winter grazing. Use certified seed. Treat small grain seed, Plant with a grain drill and roll the land after planting. Grazing may be begun when the plants are four to six. inches tall. Do not overgraze, Let the animals remain on pas- ture just long enough to fillgenerally about two hoursthen take them off pas- ture to avoid unnecessary. trampling. In February or early March, apply 50 pounds of nitrogen for additional grazing, hay, or silage.
