Steers akes place at Tifton on the average by TO * THE MississiPPl Are Your Milk Cows | = Pets Or Producers? - Are you keeping a guy pound ine fat milk cow as a pet? Agricultural Extension Service dairy- men note that it costs about $85 per year io feed and maintain a dog as a pet, and they point out that there are about 100,- 000 milk cows in Georgia that are not producing enough milk or butterfat each year to pay for the feed and labor they require. Are your milk cows ducers? pets or pro- the end of the grazing period than those on Abruzzi rye. Abruzzi rye is more winter hardy, grows a litile faster in the fall and will produce from 50 to 75 pounds more liveweight gain than will oats on comparable areas and fertilized alike. Both will produce carcasses whose fat is slightly yellow. COMMERCIAL BREEDING CATTLE For wintering commercial breeding cattle grazing should be rationed to about four hours daily by feeding some low grade roughage such 2s corn cobs or oat straw. Winter grazing planted for dairy cows can be utilized earlier. in the fall or winter than when planted for fattening beef cattle since dairy cattle can be grazed for an hour or so daily and removed. Very often this luscious winter grazing from the small grains will result in a marked inerease in milk production per cow even though _ grazing is limited to only an hour or so daily. The small grains contain a stimulus for milk pro- duction over and above the additional food value furnished by the crop. For dairy animals, it is wise to practice rotation grazing, which means at least three areas of grazing so that two could be making renewed growth while the third is being. grazed. At this station, one-half. acre of annual win- fer grazing per cow has furnished 60 percent of the total roughage intake of the milk cow from the first of December until the middle of April. The secret of good annual winter grazing from oats and Abruzzi rye is early land preparation, sufficient seed. and ample fertilization. growth must take place before cold weather if abundant grazing is to be available during mid- winter. Sufficient nitrogen should be pr esent when temperature and moisture conditions are favorable in the fall and early winter. PREPARE LAND IN SEPT. September land preparation is important to conserve the September rainfall which is more rliable than October rains in the Coastal Plain area. As far south as Tifton, small grain plantings the first part of October are more reliable than late September. Early October plantings are necessary for best winter grazing results. Novem- Ber: plantings are satisfactory for small grain pro- duction but ordinarily too late for excellent winter grazing. Adequate fertilization is highly important in obtaining good fall and early winter growth of oats and Abruzzi rye. Grain intended for heavy Good pes | Re-Clean Oat, Rye Seed Ga. Farmers Are Urged By HUGH INGLIS Agronomist es Crop Improvement Assn, Charles H, Fite, of Cedartown, reports the following oat yields taken from the same field: From.seed which had been - re-cleaned and graded into large seeds before planting produced 100 bushels of oats per acre while the seed that had been planted as combine run produced on 60_ bushels per acre. Now that the time for planting oats and other small grains is at hand, we can not overe- emphasize the importance to: farmers of having all their seed re-cleaned to remove weed seed, erop mixtures and very small oat seed. | All small grains seed should be treated. ; Georgia farmers ought to stop planting mule feed oats. Every year we hear of two to three hundred thousand bushels of it being sold to . farmers, some of it misbranded and some even without any seed tag at all on the bag. Dont buy_a pig in a poke. Make sure you know whats in that seed bag before you buy it. grazing should receive 400 to 500 pounds of 4-12-12, or 2-12-12, or 0-12-12 at time of planting. An application of at least 100 pounds of nitrogen per acre is essential to high forage yields. Nitro- gen may be applied as land is being prepared or at time of planting. All of the common sources of nitrogen are considered satisfactory for grains. = : ROTATE YEARLY The same diseases do not affect oats and Abruzzi rye; therefore, yearly rotation planting can be made on a given area for many years without building up disease in the soil for either crop. It is not wise to follow oats with oats or Abruzzi rye with Abruzai rye on the same land for more than two years. For the Coastal Plain, Southland is the best early oat. Victorgrain and Arlington are the better medium-early varieties, and are best for grain. For excellent winter grazing from oats and Abruzzi rye: 1. Prepare land early to conserve moisture fog early October Plantings, 2. Apply at least 100 pounds of nitrogen before planting. 3. Apply sufficient phosphorus and potash. (Ap- . proximately 500 pounds of 2-12-12), : 4. Seed at the rate of 4 bushels of oats or @ bushels of Abruzzi rye per acre. 5. Get ample growth to carry a 600 to 800-pound ~ steer per acre continuously if to be used te fatten cattle for slaughter. 8. Practice rotation grazing if to be used for milk production. 7. Practice yearly rotation of oats and Abruzzi rye if the same fields are used successive years. 2 ae 8. Remove animals from oats grazing from February 15 to March 1 if a good grain yield is desired. - Georgia, First: * PEANUTS ~ - BROILERS - '@ NAVAL STORES - @ PEACHES PIMIENTO PEPPER e IMPROVED PECANS PAGE TWO oS MARKET BULLETIN of an the mailin REAU OF M GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Address all items for publication ana requests to Be list and for change of address to STATE RKETS, 222 STATE CAPITOL, Atlanta, U. .
