Pelham, Tif- hex A chain is only as strong as_ | }-some growers make much better than _ this and many make less. If care is exer- _cised to strengthen all the links in the chain, it is not beyond reason to ex- pect 300 bushels or more per acre. VARIETIES: Because of its depend- ability and market acceptance, Rutgers heads the list of varieties recommended in Georgia. Other varieties which have done well in South Georgia are Stokes- dale, Urbana and Big Boy (a hybrid). in addition to the above mentioned _varieies, Marglobe does well in middle ~ and North Georgia and Longred has per- formed well in North Georgia. LAND: SELECTION AND PREPAR- eS ATION: Tomatoes will grow on a wide variety of soils. In general, sandy loam | soil with good drainage and moisture holding capacity is preferred, If the soil -has a hard pan or subsoil-compaction at plow sole depth, it should be broken in |. order to-allow deeper root -penetration. | Planting tomatoes on deep soil with good physical structure will help reduce fruit cracking and blossom.end rot and insure a greater yield of quality tomatoes. _ FERTILIZER AND LIME: Take soil samples for lime and fertilizer recom- mendations. Lime, if needed should have already been applied for this years crop in order to be most effective. If possible, select land that has been limed for a previous crop and already has a pH of a0: 5 to 6.7. Most soils in Georgia should: have from 1000 to 2000 pounds of 5-10-10 or | 4-12-12 fertilizer per acre for tomatoes. In order to avoid fertilizer injury to roots at transplanting time, it is suggested that. not more than 500 to 800 pounds of fer- - tilizer be applied under the row. It will | be best to apply this-at plow depth sev- eral days before transplanting and mix with the soil with a sweep or similar im- plement. The balance of the needed fer- | tilizer may be: broadcast before planting or applied as side placement at the first or second cultivation, Some growers have reported good results from deep place- ment of fertilizer for tomatoes. m most cases, sidedressing with nit- rogen should be delayed until fruits on the first cluster are about the size of hen eggs. About 100 to 150 pounds of 14-0-14 is suggested for sidedressing in South Agricalt urn CALENDAR March. 28, aitee. ~ Ske Sheep short course. April 2, Gainesville N.E. Spacing of 4 x 4 feet, 3 x 5 feet, 3 x 6 feet, or 2% x 7 feet will give the desired space. Many growers prefer, the wider rows because it allows more space for cultivation, ee and harvesting operations. 2. REDUCE TRANSPLANTING SET- BACK: Plant only strong, healthy plants as soon as they are received. Do NOT \ ~ use weak, diseased or poorly colored plants. If possible, set plants on a cloudy day or during the afternoon. Use a starter or transplanting solution in the transparent water. A starter solution is - a high analysis, highly soluble fertilizer. , CULTIVATION: Cultivate to control weeds and grass. Deep cultivation should be avoided except possibly the first aE transplanting. Taller vegetables, and those or have a sprawling habit, must be given more distance between rows. In small gardens, 4 feet tance, given only for such crops as bush squash and cucumbers. After you know where the rows are to be, a- line should be stretched to mark the first row. Some gardeners use a straight, narrow board as a ruler to mark the row. A heavy cord wound on an iron reel is handy, but any strong cord stretched between two stakes will do. ( Using the corner of a hoe, draw in the soft soil a shallow trench with this line as a guide, This is known as a drill. Some prefer to use the end of the hoe handle and for very small seeds the corner of a stick pressed into the soil is adequate. Others have small hoes which they like; but it is more a matter of touch than the tool. For small seeds such as rad- onions, carrots, lettuce, and endive, a drill half an inch deep is enough. A little deeper an inch for peas, beans, and low sowing is preferred howa- days in the cool, moist spring, but make drills a little deeper when hot weather comes. young, $5 pr. Write Mrs. G. |W.
