' _ The program will also be concerned with educating the consumer to the value of quality in produce and poultry products . and teaching the housewife what to look for in buying these farm products. Boyce Dyer, director of the Market Division of the department will head up. the work on produce. Paul Jolley, di- - rector of the Inspection Division and C. E. Boggs, chief of the egg section for the department will supervise the work in relation to eggs. Jack Gilchrist, di- rector of the Information. and Education Division, will divide his time among both . groups in assisting with the administra- tion of the program. ~The. Federal funds for use in im-- proving the marketing of produce and eggs have been available for some time but this is the first time there has been an effort on the part of Georgia to par- ticipate in the cost-sharing program. - [ am confident that this new project will help us greatly as we work to strengthen our farm marketing system. _ Farmers Organize cs Vegetable Associations Georgia farmers in six state farm. market areas have organized vegetable growers associations as an outgrowth of meetings sponsored by the Agricul- tural Extension Service and the State Department of Agriculture. - The meetings were held at Thomas- ville, Valdosta, Moultrie, Nashville, Tif- ton and Adel. Additional meetings are planned at other state farm market sites to discuss with interested farmers the possibilities of increased vegetable pro- duction and to iron out marketing diffi- culties. At each of the meetings already held the majority of farmers in attendance agreed that they must do a better job of holding culls off the market. They were also in agreement that better grad- ing and marketing facilities are needed on state farm markets. The State Department of Agricul- ture plans a continued program of assist- ance to help the vegetable growers im- prove the quality of vegetables offered on state farm markets and expand their markets to take care of increased pro- duction. - New Leaflets Aid Farmers In Marketing Vegetables Three new leaflets are now being dis- tributed to county agents to help produce growers in the marketing of three pro- duce crops sweet corn, tomatoes and cantaloupes: The leaflets, written by W. C. Carter, Extension Service economist, include in- formation on a variety of subjects such as varieties, marketing practices at har- vest time, judging for maturity and rec- ommended methods of picking, sorting, grading, packing and selling. Farmers interested in obtaining any or all of these leaflets may secure them from their county agents free of charge. Drink More Milk, Girls! As a group, women drink less milk than men or teenagers. Health officials say that many women do not drink nearly enough milk to assure health needs.
