Experi: Sale - = WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1955 Used By Ga. Dairymen To Raise Milk Oufput BY NEIL MANLEY Southern Field Hepresentative SS American Breeders Service _. The artificial breeding program in - Georgia is getting results. For example: _ the first five artificially sired daughters to finish records in the Neel Brothers herd, _at Cartersville, showed an average pro- duction of 13,904 lbs. of milk and 484 Ibs. of butterfat, which represented an increase of 1,758 lbs, of milk-and 39 Ibs. of butterfat over their dams. This herd, which is. Holstein, was the high Dairy Herd Improvement Association herd in poe for the Le 54 testing period. oe In the ane ae on 1B) aby Cine, also of Cartersville, the first 11 ert cially sired daughters averaged 7,670 Ibs. of milk, and 392 lbs. of butterfat. This was an increase of 559 Ibs. of milk, 31 Ibs. of butterfat over their dams. At Millen, E. Ss Gay and Sons fear that the first three Jersey artificially sired daughters averaged 1,187 lbs. more milk and 46 lbs. their dams. In the same herd the first, four artificially sired Guernseys averaged 1,034 lbs. more milk and 40 lbs. more putterfat than their dams. Similar increases are be ie pend in many other areas of Georgia. i BELOW NATIONAL AVERAGE According to the U. S. Dept. of Agri-. culture the average dairy cow in Geor- gia produced 3,600 Ibs. of milk last year. This is 2,000 Ibs. less than the national average. Therefore, it is obvious that there-is a very definite need in Georgia for improving the performance of the average dairy cow in this state. The average production of daughters of sires used by Georgia Artificial Breed- ing Associations at present are as follows: Breed Milk (Ibs.) Butterfat (lbs.) Yo Bfat Holstein 14,800 599 Ot Jersey 10,271 527 9.13 Guernsey 10,123 501 4.95 This chart shows plainly that arti- ficially bred cows in Georgia are e produc: eae more butterfat than | NUMBER 14 to improve dairy herds, Cotton Marketing Quotas _Up For Vote, December 13 Georgia farmers go to the polls Tuesday, Dec. 13 to say whether they want cotton marketing quotas for next. _years crop. All farmers who produced cotton this year are eligible to vote. If two-thirds of the growers voting approve the quotas the marketing quotas will be in effect for the 56 crop, and penalties will be made on cotton pro= duced on acreage above the producers allotment. _ However, if quotas are rejected by _ one-third or more of the voters there will be no marketing quotas or penalties, and loans on the basis of 50 percent: of parity will be available to growers who plant no more than their allotments. ~ Loans on the basis of 75 to 90 per- = cent of parity will be available to grow- ers on cotton produced on their alloted acreage if the quotas are voted. Regardless of the vote outcome acre- ge allotments will continue in effect for the 1956 crop: i ing three to four times as much milk as the average Georgia dairy cow. ' Artificial breeding is used essentially however, the American Breeders Service does offer some semen from the beef breed Angus. TO INCREASE PRODUCTION - The primary objective of artificial breeding is to increase milk and butterfat production among dairy cows through use of proved bulls. Female offspring of artificially bred cows are compared in milk and fat production with other pro- ducers among the herd and the etter -producers in time displace the weaker producers. Male offspring are not kept for breeding purposes but are usually sold as veal calves as the farmer con- tinyes to have his cows artificially bred. Considering the low cost of artificial breeding (about $7.50 per head) among other advantages, it would seem wise for the dairyman to breed his cows ta (Continued on Page 8) PEANUTS _ + BROILERS Georgia, First: * NAVAL STORES PEACHES _ PIMIENTO PEPPER e IMPROVED PECANS . j : WATCH AL ASSOC Kear M eos Ua ain ee we eee [GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN| Address al) items for publication ama requests to be on the mailing list and for change ot address to STATE REAU OF MARKETS. 222 STATE fy CAPITOL, Atlanta. en Notices of farm produce of notice. not assume: any responsibility Bulletin, nor for any transa notives. under postage: regulations inserted one time on each request and repeated only when request is accompanied ay new copy Under Legislative Act the Georgia Market Bulletin ane Limited space vill not permit insertion of notices contain- mg more than 3 35-40 words, not t including name anda address PHIL CAMPBELL, and appurtenances admissible for any notice appearing in the ction resulting from published Commissioner Published 114-122 Pace Si., Notify on FORM 3579 By Department of Agriculiure 222 State Capitol Atlanta, Georgia Weekly at Covington.
