This 27th day of July, 1955. Marvin Griffin GOVERNOR helped to prepare these plans and evi- dence that the plans are considered well- founded can be proved by statistics on record. However, this fact is quite obvious to anyone who notes the changes in rural - landscapes in the past 10-15 years. The land changes that have been brought about in rural sections are a trib- ute to soil conservation work. We supervi- sors take pride in calling this to your at- tention during Soil Conservation Week. Much progress has been made but the job has really just begun, Soil conserva- iion people earnestly solicit the help and cooperation of the entire public in our great cause. Our soil conservation districts are geared to do the job. With your help it can and will be done. - PEANUTS + BROILERS Good soil is the first requisite for has a vital stake in the success of State Cointnitte Chairman Describes S. C. Organization By JIM L. GILLIS, JR. Chairman, State Soil Conservation Committee Soil Gonos Week is observed for the purpose of emphasizing the need of conserving our soil and water. Our state committee assumed sponsorship of S. C. Week but Governor Griffin actually started the ball rolling with his procla- mation. Before that, local meetings in every Georgia county brought about plans for publicizing the event and for arranging farm tours, field demonstra- tions, and various civic club talks and ee rae in behalf of soil conservation. The State Soil Conservation Commit- tee got its start with the legislative pass- age in 1937 of the Soil Conservation Dis- trict Law, which called for appointment ~ by the Governor of a five-man State Committee from among the states farm~- - STATE COMMITTEE MEMBERS Members, State S. C. Committee: Jim L. Gillis, Jr., Soperton, Chairman J. E. Eubank, Appling Z. P. Almon, Roopville _O. W. Price, McDonough -W. F. Hall, Sparta er-district supervisors. It is their duty to administer the district law. Georgias 27 soil conservation districts are composed of from one to nine coun~- ties per district. Each county elects one farmer and the State Committee appoints two farmers who serve as supervisors of their districts. They administer the dis- trict soil conservation program. The State S. C. Committee is a state organization operating on state funds. It has an office in Athens and a Field Secretary, Frank T. Denham, who travels over the state servicing the districts. The State Committee has an advisory committee consisting of the administra- tive officers of the states agricultural agencies, including the State Dept. of Agriculture. It would be impossible for our state committee to administer our program without the excellent coopera- tion we are receiving from all our agri- cultural agencies.
