Pom Linder Commissioner WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1954 as nals sus- more men like es May. 1ext meeting of this as- Se _ Today I wear with - eived in 1915 at the hich I attended as ey we = aie wear and oe as we 4 day in June, 4015, it tic plem the young- ing the profession will with in the future. At the ility the older must realize s of seeming- DENTAL SOCIETY | WHEREAS: ave been a continuous ~ is broken in one place, it is weakened elsewhere. In Proverbs we find these words: There is a way which seemeth right unto a man but.the end thereof are the ways of death. I want to admonish the younger men to consider well the RE- SULT of the action taken on this amend- ment. If the amendment be defeated to- day, it can be reconsidered at any time later, If it is passed, you will at least find - STATE OF GEORGIA Executive Department Atlanta ~ EXECUTIVE ORDER BY THE GOVERNOR: WHEREAS: js : A highly critical forest fire situation now exists oe the State of Georgia, and Requests have been peocerkd from the United States Forest Service, the - Georgia Forestry Commission and the Georgia Game and Fish Com- mission that, all forms of hunting (with the exception of Marsh Hen hunting), fishing, camping, picnick- ing and hiking be terminated until weather conditions have changed to a degree sufficient to reduce the present critical forest fire situation to normal, itis therefore ORDERED: : That all forms of hunting (with the - exception of .Marsh Hen hunting), fishing, camping, picnicking and hik- ing exceptions. Fishing is permitted from boats only on the public and _private lakes and streams provided no form of fire be allowed of any nature. No picnicking except in roadside parks, and further ORDERED: : That the Game and Fish personnel, Forestry Service, Highway Patrol. and all other Peace Officers are hereby directed to enforce this ban throughout the State of Georgia. In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be af- oy this the 26th day of October, 954, r /s/ HERMAN E. TALMADGE GOVERNOR > BY THE GOVERNOR: s/ JAMES L. BENTLEY, JR. SECRETARY, EXECU' IVE ARTMENT _ happen. ing be terminated with the follow- | designated areas sucl as parks or |. it pening to get rid of it. If this amendment is passed, we will have allow. ed ourselves to be placed in an UNTEN. | ABLE POSITION and no doubt pressure will be applied for full membership. We must be wise enough not to allow our- selves to be maneuvered into this UN- TENABLE POSITION : So far as I know, there is nothing in our constitution to bar negroes from mem- bership. If those favoring the amendment will attend sessions of the Negro Dental Society with their wives and take part . ee in their social functions then come 4 back and tell us how good and how pleas- ant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity, they will be showing consistency . Consistency thou art a jewel... We MUST be consistent or we will not only lose the respect of the negro, but our own self-respect as well. It the recent Supreme Court ruling goes unopposed, you may expect to have a government agent in your office pretty soon to see that you do not discriminate 5 in your practice. Now dont think this cant happen to.you. Other laws have been enforced by government agents in- t vading private business and it CAN In th recent issue of the Journal of the Georgia Dental Association we are i urged to make a concession to forestall being compelled to take a more radical step, Personally, I refuse to be intim- idated by this threat. Has America ceased to be a democracy? Do we have to meekly submit to a decree of the Supreme Court in the operation of our Dental Associa- tion and perhaps in the conduct of our private practice? I claim we have a right to discriminate in selecting our friends. We have a right to discriminate in the conduct of our den- tal practices and we have a right to dis- criminate in selecting members of our dental association. Let us not be controlled by outside influences and be deceived by those who feed our ego by pointing to our magnanim- ity when we make concessions. If the present trend continues, and we admit inferiority and continue to make con- cessions, Amercia will become the land of the timid and the home of the slave in- stead of the land of the free and the home of the brave.
