7 Phil Campbell, Commissioner 7 5 oe 2s Bulletin WEDNESDAY, Bvetes 24, 1958 NUMBER Si es i" Fan By FRED J. DICKSON Chief, Fish Management te Game and Fish Commission @ are more than 30 ,000 artifically made fish ponds in the State of anually, Georgians have invested ry pond owner should know fully utilize his a to get ine um benefits. _ whers can learn now to manage s in such a manner as to create fishing. Management of a pond is harvest the largest poundage ble size fish and to catch a nice -each Ss trip, Jer after n a mans pond is producing good he has_no trouble getting people tion and fun it affords. A pros- > pond owner can secure the ser- f his County Agent or Soil Conser- ists in constructing his pond in the manner, which is essential in pro- ; good fishing. CASH INCOME e@ ways a pond can be beneficial to ner are: (1) fishing rights, making lh pond a source of cash; (2) meat and swimming: (4) water for live- (5) irrigating crops; and (6) im- ment of the property in scenic persons have netted a profit 0 or.more on properly managed by selling fishing rights on ponds erage around 14 surface acres in . good example is a farmer who a farm 100 acres in size. He had leared $5,000 in any single year fe. When he got to be 50 years decided he had to slow up his activity. Then he decided he armer sought the best advice he d and had a pond constructed, res in size; The first pond site d had too much water passing TE OF HE SOUTH and we are constructing 3,000 to n 40 million dollars in these ul treatment at the proper times him fishing rights to enjoy the | able; (3) recreation, fishing, boat- IANS OWN 30,000 PONDS! TATE EAST OF ct MISSISSIPPI | Atlantans Must Request Bulletin Due To Re-Zoning Ktfective with the first issue in Sep- tember, (Sept. 7), all circulation of the Market Bulletin having Atlanta addres- ses will be stopped. Subscribers wishing to continue receiving the Bulletin after _ that date should request it ey by mail or telephone. This action has been made necessary due to re-zoning of Atlanta by the Post Office Department, which would result in excessive costs to the State Depart- ment of Agriculture if the Bulletins en- tire Atlanta mailing list were re-address- ed, Atlanta route and city subscribers may continue their subscriptions by phon- ing WAlnut 3561 or by writing: Market Bulletin, Dept. of Agriculture, State Cap- itol, Atlanta. on another site. The State Game and Fish Commission stocked his pond prop- erly. The owner fertilized it the required amount. PROFITABLE POND After the bass spawned, which was one year aiter the pond was stocked with _ tingerling bass, the owner opened the pond to the public, charging each per- son one dollar per day of fishing and one dollar per day for use of a boat. : After paying for his fertilizer, the labor of fertilizing his pond, and paying a negro woman for collecting the fishing rignts, the owner cleared over $8,000. This pond owner has made $8,000 or more On his pond for the past six years, _ whieh was more than he had ever made- in any single year before he built his pond; And the money came in with very little effort. Many pond owners have deep freez- . ers now and they can quick freeze their tish as they can other types of meat and have the fish for meat on the table when wanted and for fish frys for oe re- unions etc. A fish pond properly constructed and fertilized, offers a wonderful place for fishing, boating and swimming. IRRIGATION, STOCK WATERING Every pond should be fenced socat- tle and hogs cannot trample down the edges and roil the water. A watering trough should be constructed below the donwstream side of the dam with a float and Woods Abruzzi 35 bushels. Plant Certified Abruzzi SMates Farmers Urged By U. R. GORE Agronomist, Peer ent Ga. Station The selling of northern winter ry@ seed labeled as Abruzzi is not new in Georgia. Farmers throughout the South have been taking heavy losses for years by planting northern rye. This has been proved by Experiment Station tests. in rye variety tests at Tifton in 1954, Balbo, Tetrapetkus, and 10 other ryes trom Minnesota failed to set seed, but Wrens Abruzzi made 37 bushels per acre Planting unadapted varieties in many instances is the main reason farmers in south Georgia have been unable to grow rys seed. Farmers have also suffered los- ses in winter grazing because most of these northern type ryes grow off slowly and rust bad. Twenty-two samples of rye seed sent by EH. E. Winstead, State Seed Analyst, were planted at Tifton and Experiment and six were found to be labeled wrong. Growth habit showed theni to be winter. ryes. The seed analyst cannot always dis- tinguish rye varieties from seed char- acters alone, but by growing these ryes the extreme winter types can be identi- fied. / To be sure of a rye crop plant only certified Abruzzi rye seed. Florida Black Rye, also on the certi- fied seed list, has done well in south ~ Georgia for both forage and grain. " valve. The trough water should be taken within the first four feet. of the surface of the water. Then the water will be pal- atable to livestock. - Many of the more progressive farm- ers are irrigating their crops now from farm, fish ponds. If one is planning on using his pond to irrigate crops, the edges should be deepened to 3 or 4 feet in- stead of the normal two feet in depth, so that he will have the necessary depth. at the pond edges even with water level fluctuation. This is to prevent the growth of underwater weeds. A properly constructed and properly managed fish pond also affords another -'means of forming many good friendships ~ by offering people the wonderful recrea- tion of fishing.
