The Board consists of nine members le Speaker of the House (William L. Pent of he site. arm Bureau (H. Poisonous Plants Reported Killing Cattle In Georgia Dir Ce. Rife, Secretary of the Geor- gia Veterinary Medical Association has - pointed out that he is receiving reports of death-of livestock from plant poison- _ ings from many areas of the State. Two plants are causing most of the trouble, These are Bracken fern (hill- side fern) and Lantana. . - Bracken fern is found on hillsides, wooded places, in most areas of the State. Lantana is an ornamental flower that has escaped from cultivation and now growing wild in many areas. It is especially common around old house sites. CALL VETERINARIAN Veterinarians report that both of these | poisonings produce symptoms that are |. highly suggestive of acute infectious dis- eases. For this reason should either type poisoning be suspected a_ veterinarian | should be called immediately to identify them from other diseases that might spread to other cattle. Prominent symptoms in Bracken fern | poisoning are hemorrhages from many parts of the body. In Lantana poisoning a yellow color to the muzzle and slough- ing of the skin is noted in many animals. Because these symptoms are also seen in serious conditions such as anthrax and leptospirosis it is important to have a professional diagnosis made. | powers the Commissioner to revoke the license of any. warehouseman who holds a sale before the opening date as set by the Tobacco Advisory Board. SELLING SEASON The Act also sets the minimum sell- ing season at 27 days, and limits the sell- ing hours for each day to five hours. The operating week is limited to five days per week, providing that Saturday and Sun- day shall not be used as selling days. Section nine of the Act states that the sales rate at warehouses shall not be faster than 450 baskets per hour. The - s ~ Act requires-warehousemen to report at the close of each Fridays business the number of pounds of first-hand tobacco received, the average price per pound, and, the total sales. The report must be - Extension Service 0.K.'s Macon County Sheep By DENIS C. DELGACH Assistant Livestock Specialist Georgia Agricultural Extension. Service Sheep are available to Georgia farm- ers In any number desired at the farm of Herman Friedsam, Marshallville, Mac- on County. The females are SO ikwedout ewes, primarily Rambouillet, Corriedale, and Columbia breeds, which are recommend- ed by the University Extension Service for commercial sheep production. The only two breeds of rams recommended for Georgia use at the present time are the Hampshire and Suffolk the Hamp- shire being recommended for North Geor- gia and the Suffolk for South Georgia be- cause they can take the heat a little bet- ter than the Hampshire. RECOMMENDED % All sheep on Mr. Friedsams farm have been screened by me and are clean, _sound sheep. They were shipped to Geor- * gia from Texas, primarily. However, some of them came out of New Mexico and - Oklahoma. These sheep are for sale only after the farmer has been approved by his county agent and the Extension sheep specialist. This is to keep the program on a sound basis. : . This farm is located about middle way of the state and is convenient to Georgia farmers. Mr. Friedsam has an - ideal sheep production setup equipped with the necessary facilities and stocked with adequate sheep supplies. This en- ables the farmer to buy his ewes, rams and sheep equipment at one trip. made to the State Department of Agri- culture, State Capitol, Atlanta. With tobacco consumption going down, and the per acre production go- ing up, tobacco growers are faced with _ another cut in acreage allotments if the Federal Price Support Program con- tinues.
