ri po Farmers Phil Campbell, Commissioner ulletin VOLUME 40 WEDNESDAY, JULY 13, 1953 NUMBER 45 Wactindte Stock Yearly When Blackleg Is Found The clinic of the University. of Geor- gias School of Veterinary Medicine re- ports that it is still getting too many animals with Blackleg. A clinic official says that almost every week animals are brought in dead or dying of the disease. = University veterinarians say that while most farmers know that Blackleg will kill their cattle, many livestock produc- ers dont know that once the land is Blackleg-infected, livestock on the in- fected farm must be vaccinated every year, The vaccination is said to be as nearly 100 per cent effective as any vaccine made, and is not expensive. | _ SYMPTOMS. ; First symptom of Blackleg may be an animal found dead. Diseased animals are Usually not sick for more than a few hours, and sometimes the disease can be seen in an animal with a lame leg, swol- jen, and with skin that crackles when you rub the swollen muscles. _~ Dead animals show extreme bloat and the carcass falls apart several hours after death. Bloody froth oozes from the mouth and blood from all body openings. | No treatment is of value after swell- ing of the muscles begins. So play safe, vaccinate! } Broiler Feeder Suggestion Agricultural Extension Service poul- iry specialists advise the use of 20 five- foot broiler size feeders for every 1,000 -chickens. | gian, Roy Rogers, a Hollywood cow- | project and did the Agricultural CALEN DAR -- Notices of Agricultural events will be "carried in this column. Will Continue To Print ~ Only Agricultural News * BY JIMMY WALKER ; Editor, Market Bulletin _ Here is your New. Look Bulletin! * A lot of work and a lot of planning have gone into your new Market Bulle- tin. Several months ago, when the idea for a new type front page was born, it was decided that it would be most appro- priate if the new eolee were made by a native Georgian, by a student study- ing in Georgia in any case. Happily, the se- lected design was. submitted as a col- lege class project by a native Geor-, Jr., jiof Atlanta: Roy, an artist, not boy, worked long and hard on. the job free of charge. A. Marines and Army veteran, he is also a June graduate of the University of Georgia Art School, and is now employed with Ad Design studios, Atlanta.. EDITORIAL POLICY Thanks go, too, to Dean John E. Drew- ry, of the Universitys Henry W. Grady Roy. Rogers, Jr. School of Journalism, for his help in get- ting the Bulletin a new face. While the Bulletin takes on a new look typographically, its editorial policy will not change from that begun in Jan- uary by the present administration of the State Department of Agriculture. The Bulletin will continue to print Agricul- tural News and ONLY Agricultural news along with its usual publications of ads pertaining to Agriculture. An important policy of the Bulletin is economy. During the past six months some 65,000 subseribers to the Bulletin have been removed from our mailing list. This was done without denying the Bulletin to anyone who really wants it, lere *s New Look Bulletin! Georgia's Tobacco Farmers - Urged To Grade Leaf Right Good curing, bleaching and especially careful grading has been urged Georgias tobacco farmers by the State Tobacco Advisory Board. ~ Members of the Advisory Board, ser were successful in establishing July 21 as the opening date for Georgias tobacco markets, pointed out that farmers will get a higher price for their tobacco if their leaf is properly graded, This years opening date is a week later than last years, when many grow- ers complained that the market opened too early. The extra week was sought by the Advisory Board this year to give farmers more time to harvest, cure. and grade their tobacco. Support price for 1955 flue-cured tobe acco is 90 per cent of parity. and will result in a considerable saving to the state. USE IT HONESTLY We believe the Bulletin provides a valuable service to Georgias farm peo- ple, and to many city dwellers, too. We invite any Georgian to use its services, but we urge all Georgians to use it hon- estly, and to subscribe to it only if they can make legitimate use of it. Present subscribers who cannot so use it are re- guested to notify the Bulletin so that their names may be removed from our mailing list. Another Bulletin policy calls for the cancellation of advertising from persons who do not make their claims good. The Bulletin cannot, of course, know in ad- vance the reliability of its advertisers, nor can it be responsible for its advertis- ing, but the Bulletin will not continue to print ads from advertisers who do not reasonably satisfy complaints against them, We hope you like your new Bulletin. It is dedicated to Georgias farm people but it belongs to all Georgians. We wels come your comments.
