Phil Campbell Commissioner dg groggy from ee hard-hit routh, the Georgia farmer was hit below the belt by the killing, March freeze. Whatever else it did, the foere clearly monstrated that the farmer, unlike org- ized labor in its relations with manage- ent, has no bargaining power with the 2sather. The result was interpreted by any agricultural experts as creating an gent need for Federal aid, such as in- eased acreage for controlled crops, as sll as the emergency loan program al- ady announced by the Farmers Home Iministration. : Crop | _reporis from county agenis roughout the state were not cheerful. me crops were believed to be totally st. G WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20, 1955 NUMBER 383 ] in south Georgia killed, will be replant- ed, little if any planted in north Georgia; Vegetables, practically wiped out, much replanting necessary, possible further losses if prices lower when produce ar- rives late on market. Watermelons, killed completely where out of ground but can be replanted; Pe- cans, seen as ten-million dollar crop this year, now estimated 75 to 90 per cent _ lost, but latest reports slightly. more en- couraging; Tobacco, -slight damage to plants in beds, some acreage already set out in extreme south Georgia was lost, recovery can be made; Pastures, up to 90 per cent damage depending on section of state and lay of land. State and Federal horticulturists, after extensive survey of the peach crop dis- aster, had these findings along with some recommendations: 1. Trees will have a good chance of recovery where the leaves have not been destroyed by the freeze. 2. There is evi- dence that new wood is now being regen- erated in many of the trees examined. . 3. Young trees that were planted this past winter were more severely damaged than older trees. 4. Where the leaves on young trees have not been destroyed and where the bodies of the trees have not been dehydrated by the wind, there will be a chance of recovery. 5.-It is suggested that an application of nitrogen be de- Jayed until new growth has taken place and when new wood has begun to re- place the dead tissue in the tree. This means that an application of nitrogen should be delayed until early May. 6. Trees that have not had an application of fertilizer containing nitrogen this year oe be fertilized with nitrogen earlier. . It is suggested that pruning be delay- a until new wood has started to grow. Atter growth starts, remove dead wood back to new growth. 8. Cultivate to keep weeds under control and to conserve moisture. In heavy. soils, cultivate shal- low. 9. Give the trees a chanee to recover from the freeze damage before taking any action as to pruning and fertilization. The drought plus the freeze has re- sulted in a critical feed situation on many Georgia farms, according to J. R. John- son, Extension Service Agronomist. Johnson recommends that Georgia farmers go ALL OUT TO MAKE HIGH YIELDS OF CORN: Grain sorghum is a crop that fills the need for a quick-growing and drought- resistant crop. It fits well in rotation with winter annual crops such as Crimson Clover, Blue Lupine, Hairy Vetch and small grain. Grain sorghum may be planted when it is too late to plant corn. _Feed mills furnish a market for this crop. For quick temporary grazing John- son suggesis Starr Millet, recommends succession of plantings and rotational grazing. Soybeans, which can be sold io oil mills, ean be used to follow freeze- killed crops, if the farmer has harvesting machinery. Utilize quick grazing crops for quick sil- age production, says Johnson, who also recommends corn and sweet sorghum for silage production. All summer pastures should be fer- tilized with 500 lbs. of 4-12-12 per acre this spring. Dallis grass, Bermuda grass, and Bahia will respond quickly to this treatment. Top dressings of 50 to 100 lbs. of nitrogen should be applied this spring and summer in split applications. Apply nitrogen now to winter grass. What County Agents Say Sample reports on freeze effects from county agents included these remarks: Northwest Georgia, H. B. Scoggins, Whitfield County (Dalton): A $70,000 loss in small grains, about $5,000 loss in alfalfa. -Southwest Georgia, J. A. Mauldin, Mitchell Co. (Pelham): About 30 per cent damage to 20,000 acres winter graz- ing. Pecan crop loss is 90 per cent or $750,000. Loss of 2,000 acres tomatoes, 2,500 acres watermelons. All of 30,000 acres corn, $240,000, must be replanted. Cotton losses $80,000 for 11,000 acres. Central Georgia, S. B. Adair, Jones County, (Gray): Peach crop a total loss. Northeast Georgia, W. V. Chafin, Hart County, (Hartwell): Thirty per cent oat erop killed, $225,000. Wheat loss, $75,000. Winter grazing damaged 75 per cent. Southeast Georgia, Olen Hunt, Ap- pling, (Baxley): Tobacco loss, $26,000. Will cost $26 per acre to reset 850 acres tobaceo killed. Pecan loss, 90 per cy or $43,000. Colquitt Led In Income Received From Crops In 53 Colquitt County, in southwest Geor- gia, and site of some of the nations finest farm land, led the state in income re- ceived from crops in 1953. The total farm ineome for Colquitt (includes all farm income sources) was $14,347,000 in that year. Progressive and fast-growing Moultrie is the county seats Other Georgia counties high in crop {income in 1953: Worth Co. (Sylvester), $13,441,000; Mitchell Co. (Pelham), $11,- 645,000; Early Co. (Blakeley), $11,336,- 000; Tift Co. (Tifton), $10,726,000; all in southwest Georgia. In east central Georgia, Bulloch Co.
