Phil Campbell, Com pinner _ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 1955 NUMBER 29 outh, ay ran on. four lots of seed sioner ey Agsouture ates oe Coa: Gua: anteed Top Farm, Cor- Livestock Festival. . Torgesen, Sales e Polled Hocigede ~ jb which, 40 all appearances, looked all right. _ His results were as follows: (Pegs re- fers to immature seed), cles Pereent Germinating 2 Spanish Lot 1 49.75 Runner Lot 1 -- 83:75 Runner Pegs Lot 1 se G20 Runner Pegs Lot 2 8.75 In an average year not even the best of we above lots would be recommended for planting. However, due to the scarcity of good seed this year it may be neces-_ sary to plant seed of low- germination. The Commissioner of Agriculture has al- ready issued a directive making it possi- _ ble to sell seed: which germinate as low as 60 per cent. ae The planting of low germination at means that every possible means must __be taken to secure a good stand. A poor a stand means extra work in weed control and also means a poorer yield. Planting Over means additional costs and the later plantings as a rule are the lower yielders. : Dr, Higgins of the University s Geor- gia Experiment Station and Mr. S. A, - Parham, Agronomist at the Universitys Coastal Plain Experiment Station at Tif- ton, offer the following suggestions 2Ot obt taining good stands. _-- 1. Run germination tests on all plant- ing seed, Top quality peanuts should run _ 90 per cent or better and 60 to 70 pounds of. such seed per acre is required for a good stand. Thus, for example, if your peanuts germinate only 60 per cent, the amount of seed required would be 90 to. 105 pounds per acre. Other percent- ages would be calculated in the same manner. This should add no cost since seed for planting should be sold on the _ basis of germination. 2. Be sure that all seed are treated ~ properly. Two per cent Ceresan or Ara- san (Ceresan has been found more effec- tive) are recommended for seed treat- ment. Germination tests should be run after the seed is treated. Three ounces of 2 per cent Ceresan per 100 pounds of shelled seed gives sufficient safety. Treat- ~ ed seed sroule d be oaeeed Bnd and held a bags for at least 48 hour Detore pian _ing. DO NOT USE CERESAN M OR 5 : PERCENT CERESAN FOR TREATING ek _ PEANUTS. | = 8. Avoid fertilizer injury. Peanuts that are germinating can be seriously in- jured by coming in contact with a band of fertilizer, Fertilizer may be broadcast ahead of turning or just before the last disking prior to planting. When applied in the drill, fertilizer should be 3 inches to the side and at Leas 2 to 3 inches below _ the seed. 4, Plant properly. Cheek Dinars fre- quently. Cover seed 2 or 3 inches on light . soils- -and 14 to 2 inches on the heavier soils. The diaportant thing is to plant enough properly treated seed in the correct man- ner to insure a good stand.
