VOLUME 40 Editorial By TOM LINDER Our word goodbye is the con- ensation of four words God be ith ye. In the original import, they were words of final parting when friends did not expect to meet again. he French Au Revoir carries the implication of a temporary separa- tion and is a happy term carrying ex- pectation of happy reunion after a lapse of time. It is in this happy spirit of looking to the future that | bid my friends, one and all, au revoir as | leave the post of Commissioner of Agriculture after an administration of sixteen years as head of the De- Ee ment of Agriculture. It is impossible for anyone except | cayselt to understand more than a small part of the problems, trials and difficulties through which we have passed in an earnest effort to be of real benefit to the farmers-and the people of Georgia in this post with. which they have honored me through these years. At this time there is no man except myself who has had the opportunity to be fully acquainted ith the multiple duties and oppor-_|- unities of the Department of Ag- riculture to benefit the people of the State wherever they may live. | sincerely hope that my successor may enjoy the full cooperation of the Leg- islature and Executive Branch. of Goy- o carry forward the yery necessary ork of the Department. Railroad train between Macon and Atlanta, | was on my way for the first | : _ time as a member of the Georgia Leg- ly impressed with the responsibilities f a legislator as | rode along stand- ng on the rear platform of the train, with the plowmen and the hoe hands; ge and their promise of bountiful ryest of rich, luscious fruit; the heads to the rain and the oe Georgia Farmers Torn Linder Commissioner WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 5, 1955 - NUMBER 18 AU REVOIR nment in securing necessary legis lation and adequate financial support - In June 1923, riding a Southern islature from Jeff Davis County. Deep-. considered the countryside through which we passed, the cotton fields | peach orchards with their verdant fo- jreen corn with tascele 1Bisl |. sunshine: the country schoolhouse where children gathered for instruc- tion for living in a civilized country and assuming the duty of leadership in the years to come; the country churches with spires pointing upward and the cemeteries with their white grave stones nearby, monuments to a great Christian civilization such as the world had never seen, | raised my heart to the Almighty and yowed a yow that if He would guide and direct me and aid and protect me, that so long as | held any kind of public trust 1 would be true to that trust to the - best of my ability and seek to pass on to future generations that Chris- tian civilized land which | and mil- lions of others had inherited from our forbears. Through all the years | have. en- deavored to keep that vow and in spite of errors, in spite of weaknesses and human. frailty, my mind has ever returned to that purpose as the need- le seeks the poll. Because of this experience and 7 blessing of the knowledge of Gods presence, | am not concerned with the outcome of political campaigns believing that God rules through His permissive or. direct providence; and that whatever is, will be revealed _to be for the carrying out of His will. | would appreciate continuing to ~ hear from my thousands of friends from time to time and to haye them come by and see me when they are > in Atlanta. Please address personal mail to me and come to see me at 808 Georgia Savings Bank Building, 84 Peachtree Street (where Broad and Peachtree meet). ~ As we go into the year 1955, all of us who have. lived through the first part of the Twentieth Century real- ize and understand the tremendous speed at which this old world is now frayeling. In this half century there has been more scientific develop- ments in every fieldthan during all of the balance of time of which we have any record. This itself should cause all thinking men and women to realize that we live in momentous days. The world seems to be in a hurry to reach the end. More energy has been expended to destroy people in that half century than in all other recorded time. More taxes have been collected in that half century than in all other recorded time.. More whis- key and tobacco has been consumed in that half century than in all other recorded time. More misery and pros- perity has.been experienced in that half century than in all other record- ed time. In that period the peoples of more of the earths surface have become pawns in the hands of money- crazed and power-crazed men than in all other recorded time. Men run to and fro at tremendous speeds; knowledge is increased, but wisdom to deal with current day events seems to be entirely lost by man. When Jacob slipped away from his father-in-law, Laban, and was overtaken by him, they parted after erecting the mound of stones, the name of which is Mizpah, meaning | watchtower. A dear friend of mine has just presented me with a poem, the title of which is Mizpah, and | want to pass it on to you. MIZPAH Go thou thy way and | go mine, Apart, yet not afar; Only a thin yeil hangs between The pathways where we are. And God keep watch tween thee and me, This is my prayer; He looks thy way, He looketh mine, And keeps us near. I sigh sometimes to see thy face, But since this may not be, I'll leave thee to the care of Him Who cares for thee and me. With love and devotion to my friends and with a prayer for the welfare of Georgia, the Nation and the World, I say unto you: Au revoir and God be with you till we meet again TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture ons 22 the mailing GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN ligt, and for change ot aoe. to STATE READ OE Me RKETS. 2% lien Care!
