Tom Linder Commissioner over Soaataie the- last convinces me of the ex- 1 of immediate financial assist-= : Farmers _cannot. pees from one lender to another. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST Ie 1954 and other benefits be made avail- able to Georgia farmers at once. I am in receipt of the following tele- gram from Congressman Paul Brown of the 10th District: Glad to have your telegram. Sec- retary Bensons Office called me and stated their top men would be in Georgia Monday to check on drought situation. In meantime Mr. Harvey A. Dahl, Assistant Direct- or of Agriculture Credit, is in Geor- gia now making personal survey. Mr. Kenneth Scott, Director of Agriculture Credit and Mr. R. B. - McLeaish, Administrator, g ers Home Administration, will be Farm- down there Monday. I am very hopeful now we will succeed in our + undertaking. I am submitting your telegram-to Secretary Benson. Drought relief for Georgia farmers on a basis of direct grants instead of loans is imperative if we are to escape serious consequences not only to agriculture but to all business and industry in the State. Loans do not provide an answer to our problem. The farmers crops are al- ready lost or have been severely dam- aged. Most farmers have invested all their money in this years crop and many are in debt to banks and other credit agencies. Loans, if used to pay existing debts, do not provide financing of other crops but would merely shift the farmers debts He would still have lost his crop or suffered dire damage to his crop. On aie other kane: if grants are made - available to the farmers, this money can _ NUMBER 50 ORE ABOUT OUGHT RELIEF be used to alleviate a part of the damage | suffered and will put the farmer in posi- tion to produce another crop with some hope of getting back even at the end of the 1955 crop season. -I noticed recently where Congre imately six billion dollars for relief in foreign countries. that we should be taking six billion dol- lars of our tax payers money to relieve distress in foreign countries and, at the same time, refuse to grant whatever is necessary to relieve these drought strick- en American farmers. As I dictate this, the gentlemen from Washington have not-yet been reported to my office but I am expecting some immediate reaction from their visit to Georgia and I will follow through on this and use every means at my: command to convince our Federal Agencies of the justice and necessity of making grants to Georgia farmers at this time. Business and industry have an equal stake in this matter with the farmers along with all working people in the State, because if relief is not granted to the farmers, the result will be reflect- ed in business and job conditions in the State. It is therefore essential for men of influence in every walk of life to lend their influence and assistance in urging that this relief be granted.
