atggeee a aphang se 3 PUR, Tom Linder Commissioner Editorial By TOM LINDER he following i is a summary of drought ge throughout Georgia, gathered and released by the personnel of the Exten- sion Service. It is reproduced here to show eneral over-all damages suffered by armers, : Three million acres in pastures, jairy losses where dry weather af- d. pastures, farmers are losing 500 00 oe of milk per acre, al cow, per pland pastures a furnished very grazing for the past two months the grass has burned brown. The millet and other grazing crops ve died. Farmers are feeding silage Losing. 26 million pounds. The cost ther crops affected peaches, veg- During the week of July 26, I had a. from the fields of eorn, sotton and pea- nuts. The samples of corn were taken from the best stalks that could be found and from the worst damaged stalks that eould be found and from other stalks showing varying degrees of damage. The best ears of eorn are of medium - size and the grain is well filled out on the cobs; but, there is a high percentage of damage which appears to be a dry rot. Mr. Samples states that in his sur- vey over the five counties he found only one field where the eorn was as good as this and that was early planted corn. The next best sample is-a small ear about seven inehes in over-all length with the cob fairly well eovered, with. grain but with some skips and nearly all the grains misshapen. This corn elearly shows ~ the effect of deficiency of moisture and I would estimate that production could not be more than forty percent of normal. Remember that the two foregoing samples represent the best eorn that was found in the five counties, Thirteen other samples all show dam- age from sixty percent to one hundred percent. A number of samples show only one and two grains of corn to the cob and some show no corn whatsoever. If the fifteen samples. submitted is a fair representation of the eorn in the five counties, I would say that the over-all damage to the corn crop in those five counties would amount to between nine- ty and ninety-five percent. Of course, - there are many farms in those five coun- ties which cover a large area of country and it is impossible, with a limited sur- vey, to determine whether or not these samples are a fair representation of all _ the corn in the five counties; but certainly it gives a definite idea of the damage suf- fered by the farmers. Mr. Samples tells me that the fields inspected range from small acreage plant- ed in corn to as high as one thousand acres planted in corn, Certainly the farmers will, in addition to losing the labor and money invested in their corn crops, be forced to buy whatever corn they use from now until harvest time next year. COTTON What cotton there is, is now being picked and ginned and we will soon have definite figures on enough of the crop to know about what percent will be made.- We do know, however, that many fields of cotton are a total loss and.many others run from fifty to one hundred percent loss. PEANUTS The samples of Spanish peanut vines brought in show one hundred percent damage. Mr. Samples tells me that the runner peanuts still have a chagce to make between twenty-five and fifty per- cent of a crop but it is too early yet to tell definitely what the out-come will be on the runner peanuts. Of course, there is a tremendous loss to the farmers be- cause many of them depend to a very large extent on peanuts as their chief money crop. The seed, fertilizer and labor that has gone into this erop runs high per acre. TOBACCO The total loss on tobacco can soon be known as the tobacco markets are now in operation but losses will run very high on tobacco in these areas and considerable damage will be shown in most of the tobacco belt. DROUGHT RELIEF The actual loss cannot be realized from riding the roads or even walking through the fields. Many apparently good ears of corn, when the shuck is removed, re- veals bare cobs or cobs with only a few grains of corn. The same may be true with regard to cotton and peanuts. Only the harvesting will show the exact: amount of loss. Certainly Georgia is stricken to the extent. that iteshould be immediately de- clared a disaster area by the President and such relief immediately extended as ispossible under the Federal Laws, After my speech at Cartersville, Geor- gia, on July 17 in which I outlined the severe drought damage to Georgia farms and pointed out that government relief should be extended, especially in view of the large amounts of money that are readily made available for distress peo- ple in other lands, the Governor wired the President asking for relief for Geor- gia farmers; and, I am forwarding a copy of this report directly to the President, to the Secretary of Agriculture and to the Senators and Congressmen from Georgia. We will continue to follow up on this with additional information as rapidly as it can be gathered.
