To a> 998 Linder Cadinsi issioner "WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 1954 NUMBER 35 . oar was made on se 26, cat Oak- fter the close of 3 States, we meet Ss boli of the gpiedarsey aod a for all Americans today of Alexander H. Stephens, in ortal Vice-President oe In ie forefront a fhmes change and men 2. Go: federate Constitution; uf Independence or the forming of the Fede a Constitution; neither did be read in the history Athens; but more parti- y be 1 ead in the history npire and the defeat of gion before the birth of ri z mountain passs of North- Europe by the Germanic people 1e Romai _ were never able to = oe ars of the oases of the Con- - the Sons of Confederate | > with + them; but, Se. e prin ples hich the Contsd: : t begin with seces-- r oe are aoe : f he Reroic eee of an-. at Appomattox _ at Oe % By To om Linder Speech that the cause of the Confederacy - was. in principle also the cause of the men who adopted the Declaration of Inde- pendence. It was the cause of the men who wrote our Federal Constitution. It was the cause of the men and women who had forsaken the shores of Europe and come to.a strange new world in- search of liberty and freedom. The Confederate cause can never be lost, until the Declaration of Independ- ence is lost, until the Constitution of the . United States 2 lost, and until the Bill 2a Rights is lost... If the cause sof the Pontadecacy is a iost cause, then every man who fired a shot from a Federal musket and every - man who followed the Stars and Stripes from first Bull Run to Appomattox, was unwittingly contributing to the destruc- tion of the immortal principles embodied me in the Magna Carta, the Declaration of In- dependence, the Bill of Rights and every State Constitution, as well as the oe eral Constitution. We say, therefore, that the Confed- erate cause is not lost. and will never be lost so long as there are free and patriotic men and women in these United States of America to maintain a eoinent of the United States. . We people of the South and millions of others, throughout the Nation should be thankful that we belong to a race of man whose most outstanding charac- teristic is a genius for self-government.. We are still proud to claim kinship with the Anglo-Saxon race a race which, whatever virtues or faults it may possess, has been characterized throughout his- tory by its genius for and insistence upon at least some modicum of self - govern-_ ment, This was true as it emerged from the continent of Europe in 1066. Even the _ Vassals belonging to the land demanded: and received certain individual liberties. Our race has consistently refused to be governed by a king or. other autocrat holding absolute sway over his subjects. The rights that we wrested from unwill- ing King John in the signing of the Mag- na Carta and the English Bill of Rights created some four centuries later, are simply milestones in the struggle for and attainment of certain inalienable rights vommonly known as the absolute ,rights of individuals. No theory of the State as |} the end and aim of government a theory which plunged Germany into the : op First World War hag ever found any lodgment in the mind and spirit of the Sa + 5 Anglo Saxon race, * < Emerging from the-darkness and tur- moil and prose of tha ae eens the ~ ernment, Huguenots from France, enteenth. and eighteenth centuries, came nere to obtain personal _ liberty which was denied them in the Old World. This passion for individual and religious liber- ty for a proper measure of self-govern- ment equally potent among Protestants aud Puritans of New England, the Catho- lies and Cavaliers of Maryland and Vir- ginia, the Quakers of Pennsylvania, and various other groups which made up the. original Thirteen Colonies, finally merg- ed the best elements of Puritan and Cava- lier into the Colonial. Americans who weathered successfully the storm of the - Revolution and founded here a Republie bought by their common blood and fash- icned to a wisely balanced government which would insure the blessings of li- ae berty to themselves and their posterity. The men who really established our American form of government did not come here as pirates or plunderers as was the case with former migrations of peo- ple. They came as_ strong, valiant men, breaking away from repressions and limi- tations of European governments. They represented thechoice of all who were most earnest and courageous among the Muropean races and they came to stand . alone. They stood for greater economic personal and religious liberty than the Old. World would have granted them. Such were the men who, conceived and established our American form of gov- and, there were orators such as Patrick Henry, James Otis and John Adams. We may well be thankful today such ~ men God-fearing, up-standing and li- berty - loving were largely responst-. ble in launching the government under which our country has frospered up to the present time. ANGLO - SAXON RACE Let us digress fora moment and brief- ly look backward down the corridors of time to the beginning of the Anglo-Sax- on race which was, in fact, the beginning of the American Constitution. Two thousand. years ago the people who conquered Great Britian, and from whom most of us are descended, were a part of one of the great divisions of man- kind known as the Germanie race. Thou- _ sands of years prior to that time, the great Caucausian race, originating among the Caucausian Mountains and near the (Continued on Page 8) the pilgrims ~ from Holland and the Puritans from Eng- land, who landed on our shores in the sev- e There were giants in those - days such men as Washington, Madi- -son, Hamilton, Jefferson and Franklin; operated and / an the mailing, ini REAU OF MA* NATIONAL prouuce regulations inserted one time on each request and repeated only when request is Br speed ae by new copy of notice.
