And, ae to the man people in 1860, where does the, ad ogs abe are much higher 0 to. market i ina much shorter fESTOCK IN GEORGIA st of the livestock in 1860 was ~ me f so to feed S 1 L/2 million in \ word baloney may be used in the broad- est sense. People today open a can and consume the contents without question. Much of it contains portions of the inter- | ior of the animal which people eat and | enjoy out of a tin can, but many of them would turn up their noses if you invited them out to eat chitterlings, The follow- ing is a direct quotation from Page 579 cf the report of the Commissioner of Agriculture in 1866 of the United States, and I think is most interesting as a matter of history and also as the subject matter for serious thought on the possibility of Georgia as a sheep growing country. It will be seen that Georgia affords great facilities for wool growing. In a large. portio of the State sheep require no housing or feeding, and there are no northers, as in Texas. The market for wool and mutton is within easy reach. _ Why, then, should the wool growers seek _the west? With the subject of wool grow- yaad observation at home and abroad. It ing the writer is familiar from practice | is_ his conviction that considering the climate, price of land, markets and facili- - ties for summer and winter grazing, mid- dle and lower Georgia afford a prospect of more rapid fortune in wool growing - than any other region within his knowl- edge. Cotton has heretofore blinded the eyes of planters to the value of their lands for this purpose. There is no reason why the wool crop of Georgia should not be larger than its cotton crop ever was. . The drawback has ben the number: of dogs, of which there were 92,000 in the AS unless with the consent of the owner.~ State. These, however, are diminishing with the diminution of the lacks, for every farm negro has his cur. The last legislature passed a law rendering it a penal offence for anyone to enter with a -dog in a field in which there were sheep, There is reason ta hope that this dog nuisance will soon be measurably abat- ed. It is a far cry from the day when it was thought all right to kill the dogs to protect the sheep until today. Notwith- standing our Veterinary Colleges to train Veterinarians, most of them come to Atlanta or other cities where they: find it much more profitable to treat peoples pet dogs and cats than to go out in farm- ing counties and treat cattle, hogs, and poultry. After the. War Between. the States, the home- coming Confederate Soldiers were not only faced with devastated homes and poverty stricken farmers, but they were also faced with the tremendous problem | of what to do with the freed Negroes. Not only were the freed blacks totally incapable of making a living for sense ee and a a the white . people of the state, Bak oo folks were faced with Carpetbaggers and Scal- awags and Yankee bayonets at the same- time. It is, perhaps, true that in all of the annals of recorded history there can be found no parallel for~ the hardships, trials and degrading insults endured by the people of Georgia and the South. Neither can any other case be found where all of these threats were met and overcome by the courage of men and women who would not be defeated and who would not be overcome even when they stood empty handed before the bayonets of as a cruel an enemy as ever set foot on the land of a surrendered foe. As a boy at the home fireside, listening to my elders tell of their experiences and as a man reading reports from Korea, I wondered if the Chinese Reds had not read about the Yankees and the planters in Georgia. _ In-recent years Georgia has developed the greatest broiler industry of any state in the Union; but because of the prone- ness of us all to devote our greatest efforts to increase whatever business that shows a profit, the broiler industry in, Georgia and the Nation shows evidence of being undone, Farmers and feedmen who are engaged in the broiler industry find themselves faced with ruinous prices for broilers and with tremendously increased broiler production. Three years ago, Geor- gia attained leadership by producing eighty-eight million broilers. At the pres- ent time; more than three million beby chicks are being placed on feed each week. Should this rate continue with only normal losses, we would produce within twelve months around one hund- red fifty million broilers, er more than twice as many as we did three years ago. Ge & FARMING IN 1954 a Generally speaking, farmers of the country are facing a most#uncertain fu- ture. There are a great many signs of economic decline, which, unless handled promptly, will be reflected in the farm- ers income for marketing this years harvest. It is now known that more than four ~ million people have lost their jobs and are now unemployed. A great many of these are under Social Security and will draw unemployment payments for a while. Many others are not under Social Security and now have no income. Most of this unemployment is the result of large stocks of merchandise which has been manufactured in this country or {imported from abroad. During the last twenty years, the general course of our economy and money (Continued on Page 8) Git pach oe SL aateg on ct mal REA . and for chan: MAR BTS. 222 STA GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Js _ items. for publication, ana requests to be 104 - address to STATE ArmOL Atlanta. of notice. Some of this has been due to our national policy and ~ some of it has been due to war, prepara- tion of war and aftermath of war. The interest onthe national debt added to fixed payments the government must make for maintaining the military establishments, the government benefits of different kinds, the financing of Old Age Benefit, unemployment, and other things add up to a large percentage of the total national revenue. Our present national farm policy of reduced acreage on some crop leaves the farmers who grow those crops with approximately the same overhead that must be paid, notwithstanding reduced! acreage to be planted. Because of a general decline in pues the farmer receives for fie. crops and | livestock, the farmer is likely at the end of the crop year to find himself with less .cash income, but with little reduction of cost of production. And, the farmer who _ does not take all.of these-things imto con- ' sideration and try to produce at lower cost will probably show a loss at the end of the year instead of a profit. Many farmers are in debt. Some of them because of credit buying of land, machinery and equipment and are too heavily involved to withstand a severe _ loss of farm income. Because of the so-called hard money policy and over-expansion of industry in this country, millions of the people who are the farmers customers for food are now forced to reduce their purchases for food and clothing i in onde to m ments on homes and automo course, when city people are fi live on less, the farmer immediat the effect in the demand and p receives, especially perishable We believe. in intelligent op and certainly do not wish to oe ae of. gloom, but we would _ than candid if we failed to point o controlling factors now at work country and to raise a warning especially to those farmers who are to go in debt to: carry on farm ope!
