may we exclaim with pride that
made it so. As worthy as your
plishments have been through the
these have not made it great. Its
ss lies in its beginning. Love was

banded themselves together to
the Daughters love was appar-

i Who Wore the Gray; love for
ause which he had served. were
ost in every heart. Love of
0; animated them! The South
be vindicated. The truth must be
e world and well worthily did
men carry out their purpose.

took a lot of courage in that era
d forthright against the distortion
rical truths and to refute the

nm laid aside their innate modesty
imidity and considered it a privi-
e a part in keeping the his-
the South straight in the minds
that | the youths of our land, espe-
yo those of the. South, ipieht know

women by their efforts have

a true record of the greatest

undation stone. When the noble

y at times heaped upon the Sou-
use and its leaders. But these

pe cueoned as they were to hard-

ne men with a smile on their

a great odds, a battle proudly

When the sun of the Confederacy

went down behind the dark hills of Ap-

pomattox, they who had sent him forth
dry eyed and dry lipped bade him fond-

-ly welcome home and hand in hand they

planned their future anew. With noth-
ing left but faith and honor they began
together the perilous journey. Step by
step they mounted the hill of endeavor,
struggling, oft times fainting under the,
load, and yet each time girding them-
selves anew until the mountain top was
in view and as they scaled the heights

a voice seemed to say,. What are these

and whence came they; and the answer
came in swelling chorus these are those
which have come up out of great tribu-
lation.

This was the spirit of the women of
the Confederacy and this was the spirit
which animated them when they pledged
themselves to make the Confederate
Soldier and His Cause, through truth,
more glorious in defeat than any other
in the hour of its greatest victory.

So great was their impress as an
organization in its early days that the
Sons of Veterans appeared before them

- with the desire to erect a memorial to

their virtues, their courage, their valor
of which they were the highest exempli-
fication. But the time was not ripe. They
had more work to do. Not as long as Jef-
ferson Davis or other great leaders had
not been honored; not as long as any

teran or his family needed relief; nor

as long as his son or daughter needed an
education would they allow themselves
to be honored though they were

worthy of all honor. A selfless devotion

to duty.

The time has come, even though the
hour is late that these, our own moth-
ers, must have the highest honor at
our hands that we may bestow. Monu-

ments have been erected; our great lead- ~

ers honored; our relief work is on a firm
foundation; our education work marve-
lous in its scope. All of this and more
has been accomplished. Surely we will
not withhold a tribute to those who by
their splendid devotion to duty and un-
swerving loyalty to the South have won
the shaiestion! of the world. All honor
to those courageous women of the South-
land who taught their children that hon-
or was the watehword of life and that
death for noble ends made dying sweet.

You can but wish to_ honor them.
Down deep in your heart is the desire
to give them your tribute of love and
affection which they so richly deserve.
You can do this and more too, The way
is provided. Give your wholehearted
support to the Memorial Building to the
Women of the South. If you should fail
to make this come true, you will show
to the world that their undying faith-
fulness; their undaunted courage, their
splendid self - sacrifice are forgotten and
are as nothing to you. But you will not
fail, for you are worthy daughters of
worthy mothers.

Give your best. Make it a love-gift;
one that will typify your devotion, alleg-
iance and loyalty to those whose devo-
tion never- wavered, whose allegiance

was unquestioned and whose loyalty was

unsurpassed.

The United Daughters of the Con-
federacy is a great organization.

Love was its foundation Stone.
Through love we may keep it so.

(NOTEThe United Daughters of the
Confederacy are now raising funds to
build a $300,000.00 Memorial Building
in Richmond, Va., to the Women of the
South, as a tribute to them.)
