Tort Linder Commissioner WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1953 eon PROSE MISCELLANIES By THOMAS E, WATSON) / Lead us gently, Father Time, as you take us-to the-portals of the New Year. - We know not what may be within; and our souls_are burdened with fear, as we stand here at. the door. - Lost, forever lest, is the Confidence with which we used to go bounding in- to the New Yearas revelers hasten- ing to the feast. = We have met the Unforeseen so often, have mourned where we thought to have rejoiced, been trampled upon amid the horrors of panie and defeat, where we had so stoutly fought for victory and reward, that our hearts are sadly sub- dued. We did not seek this awful -woe Father Time. = Thrust, from some great outer dark- ness into the hurly-burly called Life, we gaze upward at the stars, in helpless ig- norance of what it all may mean; and us, swiftly, inexorably, onward to an- eee years, Some irresistible force pushes us, pushes - other outer darkness that fills us with speechless awe. Have mercy on us, Father Time. We have been beaten with many stripes, are covered with many wounds. God! How we have suffered! We knew nothing at the beginning, and we know but little now; and for every lesson we have learned, we have been made to pay in heartaches and scalding tears. 5 Always struggling, often down, al- ways anxious for the morrow, often in torture today, we have stumbled for- ward, Father Time, still looking for the smooth road and the sunny sky, and the bright companionship of success and peace. : Shall we never see them, Father Time? We shudder when we think what you did to us during the Old Year, - Father Time. Ah, but you were hard on-usbitter hard. Our little ones panted for a breath of fresh air, Father-Time: and they died like flies, in noisome, reeking, crowded ila See May the clear white page that is 1954 be filled with the zest of good health, the joy of ac- complishment, the achievement of resolutions, the fulfillment of dreams. your book of memories as one of your happiest May it take its place in Our sincere wish is that 1954 treats you so well_that when it departs down the corridors of Time, you'll count it among your luckiest years richly endowed with good health, warm friend- ships, solid achievement and high happiness. Tom Linder Commissioner Of Agriculture tenements, because there was not, in all Gods universewhere theres light and air for every flower that flecks the fielda breath of fresh air for the ie. children of the slums. Ah, it was pitiful, Father Time! Our feeble ones, young and old, per- . 7 1 . a et ished miserably of cold and hunger, in the midst of a-land that worships the Good God, and amid such an accumula~ tion of wealth as was never known hee fore since the mornimg stars looked down upon a newly-made world. s Poverty, crime, vice, drunkenness, riot, war, famine, pestilence, earthquake, and conflagration have glutted their aw- ful appetites upon us during the Old Year, Father Time. To what are you - leading us in the New? Will the heart of the world grow harder and harder, Father Time? : Will the geeed of human avarice de mand still largr sacrifice of human lives? Will the Selfishness of Classes gorge itself still further upon ravenous con- (Continued on page 4) | t j BASE IWO C GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Address all itenis for publication and requests to be put on the mailing list and for change ot address to STATE BU-: REAU OF MARKETS. 222 STATE CAPITOL, Atlanta.
