Seep Cer Your Children 1 By TOM peer = Huey, a a dondeeton between Atlanta and Birm- has brought me copy of the pro- the Georgia State Agricul- iety at the semi-annual conven- -in Columbus, Georgia, com- uesday, the 10th day of Feb- oceedings of that convention re- origin and purpose of the State ent of Agriculture. The minutes al many names of Georgians iterested in agriculture and in e of the State. realize the vital importance of that in 1874, it must be kept in mind iS person met only nine years e had surrendered at Appomat- -ginia and Joe Johnston at Greens- forth Carolina. Perhaps the most t action taken at that convention adoption of the following resolu- 2 was offered by Mr. John M. of Pike County. HERES S, The changed status of consequent upon the late disas- r, has materially unhinged and unstable our great agricultural and there is now an universal, ous, and powerful movement of ple, awakening new energies, and g the great agricultural heart e is such a wail and lamen!le d times and no money, and such 1 disquietude and_ restlessness |all these speak trumpet-tongued istakeable evils that all is not well, diy affirm that agriculture is the interest which underlies all other ts, which creates the wealth of the ook in effect, its taxes, and that e great mudsill and material inter- which the whole fabric of govern- d all its dependencie: rest, and t now has its lifes vigor sapped, and oop and die, unless strengthened pported by the strong arm of wise udential legislation; and, whereas, ernment of Georgia has no State ent of Agriculture, specially to and to advise and provide for , general and paramount inter- rhereas, the great and rising or- nown as the Patrons of Hus-_ d this, the Agricultural Con- people, and, representing the great agri- cultural interests of Georgia, do affirm, that the exigencies of times, our thrift and well-being, require that the farming and material interests should have a State - medium or department of agriculture es- tablished for wise and good purposes, and whereby they ean communicate and di- rectly make known their wants and wish- es to the Executive and Legislative pow- ers of the government. RESOLVED, That the prompt estab- lishment of such a Department of State, with a well informed, competent and sa- gacious farmer at its head, and with a just, moderate and decent appropriation for the maintenance of the same, is a just, wise and prudent. necessity. RESOLVED, That the President of this Convention, at earliest convenience, and while a bill is now pending on this subject, do send, or cause to be sent, to the Speaker of the House and President of the Senate, a copy of the above and _ foregoing preamble and resolutions, with the request that they be presented to the Georgia Legislature, now in session, and - that we urgently ask the favorable con- sideration of the same. You will note from the resolution the legislature of the State was then in ses- sion. Honorable A. O. Bacon was Speaker of the House of Representatives and cast - the deciding vote to create the Depart- ment of Agriculture. Honorable Thomas P. Janes of Greene County was the first Commissioner of Agriculture and served from 1874 until 1879.
