wine a fk e . . 2 om Linder Commissioner is eis of Sunday, May 27, rew Pearson makes the following at: be That farmers know, however, the public doesnt, is that though er hits the headlines, its wheat, n and tobacco which are really the taxpayers money. Dur- he last five years, price sup- for wheat cost the taxpayer $3,- 00,000 or 35 percent of the total of the wheat crop. : otton supports cost the taxpay-. ,714,000,000 during the same year period, or 12 per cent. products cost the taxpayer -$345,000,000 compared with a 0,000,000 yield or 1.67 per- above false n is typical of him and those news- which carry his column. _ Let us at the record shows, THE OFFICIAL RECORD ave before me the report of the States Department of Agriculture, tion and Marketing Administra- or the operations of Commodity Corporation showing their finan- erations and condition as of June Page 27 carries schedule 8 is entitled, Production and Mar- Administration, Commodity Cred- oration, Analysis of Program Re- ; from October 17, 1933 through June (951 (Realized | Gains and Losses). us see what the facts.are as Set his official report. COTTON domestic cotton for the entire per- mmodity Credit Corporation shows profit of $268,452,125.00. Puerto Rican cotton there was a $130,198.00. ~cotton export differential there oss of $41,361,218.00. - cotton rubber barter company as a profit of $11,055,451.00. American Egyptian cotton there of. $480, 617.00, and on cotton- -eottonsed products there was a $4,908,903.00. ) the supply program cotton and da profit of $1,876,199.00, ase of foreign cotton showed $5,898,352.00. mmoditys export program ed a loss of $12,538,658.00. g losses seen gains on cot- WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 1933 HOOD vs. THE TRUTH propaganda: by a net profit on cotton of $237,680,339.00. A most interesting feature of this. is that in every instance where a loss was sustained on cotton it was in connection with exports of cotton or in dealing with cotton outside continental United States. Most of the money lost on cotton ex- - ports was actually a subsidy paid to big international cotton dealers either in this country or in foreign countries. WHEAT According to this same report, total losses on wheat from October 1933 through June 1951 amounted to $68,518,- 892. Most of this money. was a gift to for- eign countries. Under the international wheat agreement which was exposed in the Bulletin several years ago, the United - States Government agreed to hold the price of wheat down to foreign countries. When they undertake to support the price of wheat in this country at a price higher than they have agreed to sell it to foreign countries, that is nothing more or less than Congress taxing American . taxpayers in order to give away a per-, centage of the wheat under the. guise of stabilizing prices. In other words, the loss on wheat was not due to the price _support program, but was due entirely to Federal legislation designed and cer- tain to cause a loss in the funds of Com- modity Credit Corporation. TOBACCO According to the report total oper- _ ations on price support on tobacco over the entire period showed a profit to Com- modity Credit ene of $5,416,417.- 00. Under supply program Commodity. Credit Corporation realized on tobacco another gain of $4,768,084.00. ALL BASIC COMMODITIES - The basic commodities under the price support program are corn, cotton, pea- nuts, rice, tobacco and wheat. Taking all of these basic crops to- gether, the report shows a net profit of $40,504,825.00. IMPORTS The only substantial losses shown were on non-basic commodities. It was principally on those non-basic commod- ities of which large quantities were im- ported to create surplus in this country, such as beans, eggs, flax, fruits and nuts, hemp, sugar, potatoes, etc. It will be remembered by readers of the Bulletin that at the time large quan- tities of potatoes were being destroyed we were buying millions of bags of po- ~ 140,859.00, was lost on wool because this tatoes from other countries and bringin, them in here. TOTAL PRICE SUPPORT In spite of all this, according to the official report, total losses on designated. non-basic commodities amounted to $701,- 206,412.00. Of this amount, 70 per cent or $477,937,940.00, was lost on potatoes alone. Most of the balance, that is $92,- country was trying to buy all the wool in the world. WARTIME CONSUMER SUBSIDY PROGRAM During the war years the Government subsidized. consumers to the extent of $2,102,328,242.00. In addition to that, Commodity Credit Corporation chased off: accounts and notes receivable amount ing to $654,015,694.00. PRICE SUPPORTS HAVE BEEN USED MERELY AS AN EXCUSE TO GIVE AWAY THE TAXPAYERS MONEY - Total operations on basic crops show: ed a profit of $40,504,825.00. Total non- basic price supports showed a loss of $981,638,955.00. Total supply program showed a profit of $302,884,816.00. Total foreign purchases showed a profit of $50, - 261,110.00. Balancing profits against losses, We /on tire program, outside of consumers sub- | = sidies, and bad notes, shows a loss: of $587,988,205.00. When we remember that this is the net results of operations ES of an eighteen-year period, we find that the annual net loss of the total operation outside of give-away and bad accounts, amounted to only $32,666,011.00 per year. _ If we should discard the losses due to imports of surplus, we would find that the operation of the price support pro- . gram over-all would show a nandsome : profit to the United States Treasury. We have not had any squawk out of Pearson and the papers that carry his _ column about losses on imports. Oh, nol That robs Americans to help foreigners. They are all for that. We did not hear any squawk from Pearson and those newspapers that carry his column about subsidizing those consumers in little Italy, little China, in little Japan, in little Rus- sia, in little Austria and Hungary, or any other conglomeration or potential com- | munist in this country. It is only when | they think they have gotten a rock to shy at the farmer who produces this food, | that they are so concerned about the tax- payers money. apt es |8 S AN SE Ze 3 TOM LINDER Commissioner of Agricultvage PAGE wo GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN: Address al) items for publication anc requests to be put on the mailing list and for change of address to STATE SECOND HAND -.
