The young manhood. of the South had followed the matchless leadership of Lee and Jackson of Hill and Johnson of Gordon and Pickett, and many other military geniuses. The seed corn of the Confederacy had been ground in the red mill of war, while th women .and children were sleeping in sheetless beds, and eating from bare tables, the linen having been used to bind up the bloody wounds of those heroes who had died in vain. . But a noble leader of that day cast forth the challenge that~in the veins of the Confederate Veterans flowed the Anglo Saxon blood unconquered and un- _ -conqucrable, and they would again build the wasted places of the Southland, and | make of it a greater country than that to which the Northern soldiers returned in victory. Since that time four score and six years have gone by. Four score and six times Old Father Tinie has completed his yearly cycle -since the last bugle call was sounded, and the last rebel yell was heard fighting under the Stars and Bars. Four score and six times the Autumn leaves have floated down upon the gentle breeze to find their last resting place on the bosom of mother earth and to make a winter covering for the couch of those brave soldiers who fell in that desperate struggle. Year by year the ranks of the- living Veterans have grown thinner and thinner, as more and more they were laid to rest among the soughing pines, the whispering oaks and the fields and - forests, which they loved so well, _ Four score and six times the shrink- ing visiets have timidly raised their heads from their winter hiding place to glad- den the hearts of mankind. The rosebuds have sprung into new life and flaunted their wanton beauty to delight the discerning eye. The honey suckles have saturated the balmy air with the odor-of the nectar of the Gods, and the song birds have awakened the echoes of music with their renewed message of light and love and life. Four score and six times the cruel heat of summer has burned down upon the heads of the thinning ranks of sur- viving herves. ce The cruel cold of winter has chilled the marrow in.the bones of some of those who were too proud to eat the bread of charity, and whose spirit of self-reliance and determination caused them to. walk : erect, and ney 3 a Peedy smile, with utter disregard of their own physical needs. - For four score and six years they have led the way through many politic fe Chicamaugas, Atlantas, and Gettysburg, and now as the sun goes down, on the last lingering few of the Armies of the Confederacy, let us giv@ them the honors of their Native States, -and crown them with the laurels of vie tory. ; The valor and spartan courage of the people of the Confederate States from of courage, unrivaled'in history, by the men of the Confederate forces, have be come immortal, and need no commendac 5; were carved in indestructible form in the hearts and minds of brave people, and will shine as an example to men and nations of the future when the little men who sought to degrade them have been ~ The principle of the States Rights as _ recognized in the Constitution of the the very cornerstone of the liberties of America and, whatever politicians, prop- agdndists: and agitators may say, the South who sought to uphold the Constitu- tion, is inescapable. a wore the Grey is being held, let it be remembered that the cause for which they- fought is immortal and, while the and, while the sons and daughters o thuse heroes are themselves marchin. down the road of time in the evening o life, yet their grandsons and granddaug= | ters and suceeding generations will re member why, and will carry on the fight as God gives them strength to preserve our country and our Constitution and will in spirit always respond to the enemy with the Rebel Yell and will flaunt in his face the Stars and Bars until the principles for which they fought and - died are recognized and obeyed.
