Tom Linder Commissioner... E 38 Editorial By TOM LINDER At the beginning of the commercial wr industry in North Georgia in 1935 me-nxlf million broilers were pro- . They yielded the farmers an in- of $230,000 according to the record. e was little optimism in the be- as to its becoming a major agri- eaterprise. Many thought it probebly last through the war d help fill the gap of our scarce upply. of $24.4 million in 1945. Following ssativ: of hostilities there was a rary setback but beginning with e industry has grown beyond the of che most optimistic. 1951 88.6 million broilers were a embracing seventeen counties few seattered producing areas, The e to the farmers was $68.5 million. 1 Georgia led the nation. forging of the great broiler producing Maryland and Delaware. The of- cords show that during 1951 the ling broiler states produced 524.6 broilers of the 791 8 milion total ed in the nation. This. industry | farmers.in these ten states a total million in 1945 is striking to observe that six of fen leading states are in the South, Maryland and. Delaware being states, January 26 the - Southeastern ry and Egg Association opened its 2 Annual three-day meeting in At- a, which attracted attendance and ibitors frum every part of nation. It probaliy the largest gathering of trymen, processors, feed manufactur- Es uipment manufacturers and others fiiterested in the poultry business that ver assembled in the South. wo large assembly rooms in the City Uuditorium wre devoted to exhibits of @ kinds and character, pertaining to 1 poultry business. The most modern WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 1953 he Georgia Broiler ndustry Marches On NUMBER 26 ed in the commercial area of North 8 million in 1951 compared with nation were in attendance, either on the program or as spectators. This only goes to show what tremen- dous expansiun has been made in the develepment of this great industry during the past few years, Many of us have felt that the industry had about reached its saturation point with the tremendous expansion made in the production of other meats, particularly beef and pork. Some speculation has been made as to whether our increased production could continue, and the producer receive a fair price for his production. The Georgia Crop Reporting Service issues a weekly report shcwing the: number of baby chicks hatched and the total number placed on the farms of Georgia and other major producing centers for that week. A compilation of these figures shows that 120.8 rillion baby chicks were plac- ed on Georgia farms during the 52 weeks of 1952, corapared to 100.7 million for the same period, in 1951. The records show that from the 100.7 million placed in 1951 Georgia farmers marketed 88 6 million broilers which yielded an income of $68.5 million. Assuming the same ratio of liva- bility and growth to marketing age exist- ed in 1952 as in 1951, the 120.8 million baby chicks should have produced 106.3 milion brvilers: Assuming that is true, what has that meant to Georgia farmers in dollars and cents? The average price paid farmers in 1949 was 2712c per pound, 25.8c in 1950 and 27.6c in 1951. The Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports in its release Hatchery Produc- tion January 15, 1953 that the average price for con-mercial broilers in the U. S. for the month of December 1952 was 29 6c as compared with 25.7c in 1951. The Dairy. and Poultry Market News Service issued from Atlanta reports average prices paid Nurth Georgia pro- ducers weekly. A compilation of. these figures for the first week of each month shows an average price for the year of 2798 1/2c per pound.. However, assum- ing that the price paid during 1952 was the same as was paid in 1951, the 106.3 million broilers should have yielded an income to farmers of the commerciai producing area of $82,174.000 which would represent an increase of $13,496,- 000 over 1951. Let me remind you that: according to a release of the Georgia Extension Kcono- mist August 15, 1949, the total cash farm income from all suurces in Georgia was $222.3 million in 1925 and $170.3 million in 1930, with cotton representing 60.7 percent and 53.1 percent respective- ly, while the cash income from all live- stock and products represented only 14 6 percent and 18.0 percent of the total. Thus it is scen from the above that the cash income from broilers alone in 1952 is from five to-six times more than the total.cash iucume from all livestock and products in she years given above. No story about the broiler industry of Georgia wuld be complete without at least mentioning the tremendous growth we have eajvyed in the production ef native baby chicks. This likewise has developed into a tremendous business, as a large percentage of the hatching eggs are produced on Georgia farms, which is another source of income from broilers that is not taken into consideration when speaking of cash income. In the early days of the industry a- bout the vnly thing that Georgians furnished was sunshine, fresh air, and the determination to build an industry in an area that was in need of a major money crop. In the early 40s when the broiler industry began to reach com- mercial proportions allied industries be- gan to gain momentum, Leading poultry- men began t6 realize that first grade hatching eggs could be produced in Geor- gia, and that our commercial hatchery- mens needs could be supplied locally. Likewise the hatcherym.en began to in- crease their facilities to meet the needs of our broiler farmers. The records show that in 1941 the commercial hatcheries of Georgia pro- | duced 11,780,000 baby chicks, Within four years the production had increased to 36,700,000 and five years later to, ap- proximately 94,000,000. The BAE report of January 15, 1953 shows a total production of baby chicks in Georgia in the year 1952 of 128.9 mil- lions, which is more than ten times the quantity produced in 1941. Many agencies in Georgia have con- tributed to the deveYopment of our poul- try industry, and probably no single a- gency has contributed more than the State Department.of Agriculture The establish- ment of large flocks, the concentration of millions of baby chicks in the hatch- eries and thousands in broiler houses (Continued on page Hight) ane |GEORGIA.
