He was n to the captains of British purchased his wheat at-Mt. the shore of the: Potomac. the highest confidence of rs whom it was said never | measure or weigh any wheat gton delivered to them. be- s ceputation of always giving re than honesty required. MOUNT VERNON Se of time the 5,000 acre ided between the original holas Spencer nd Johns son, Lawrence came in possession of the that | and John ~ on the site of the present building at _Mt. Vernon und lived there about the time that Oglethorpe founded Georgia, - to-wit: 1735 to 1738. His son Lawrence, _ the elder brocher of George Washington, came to Mt Vernon in 1743 and named the plantation Mount Vernon in honor of Admiral Vernon under. whom Law- rence Washington served in the British Navy. Lawyence Washington died in 1752 and was succeeded as proprietor of Mt. Vernoa by his half brother, George een So In: 1759: G Gaoree Washington and his _ wife, Martha Dandridge Custis, who had _ been the widow of Daniel Parke Custis, established their home at Mt. Vernon ington died in 1799 after winning the ~ War of the Revolution and after having served eight years as President of the United States. It was after the Revolution that George Washington remodeled, enlarged and developed the buildings and grounds of Mt Vernon which is today a national shrine. LAND OWNERS AND FREEDOM The pages of history are replete with evidence that it has always been men who own land and who had ambition to own land who have been willing to risk their lives for independence. It was men determined to own land who followed William the Conqueror * across the English Channel in 1066 A. D.; who. defeated the English King, and who establisred the Feudal System. It was the sane land owning barons. who faced King Juhn at Runnymede in 1215 and forced him at swords pvint to sign the Magna Carta which became known _as the charter of the liberties of English men. It was men of the same breed who demanded th:.t Washington lead them in the fight for American Independence and who wrote the Constitution of the United States, which is the charter of Americans liberties. ie: was the men of the southern llowed Lee and Jackson in a war to maintain their liberties. It was the men of the old south who stand in history without a peer in the winning of the bloodiest battles of history under apparently ins possible conditions and against apparent-_ ly impossible odds. : UNGRATEFULNESS OF THE AMERICAN CONGRESS AND THE VIRGINIA LEGISLATURE _ -In 1859 a Ladies Association of the Union purchased 200 acres including the mansion and the tomb of George Wash-- ington after the Government of the United States and the commonwealth of Virginia had declined to do so. These ladies, under the leadership of Miss Ann Pamela Cunningham of South Carolina, purchased Mt. Vernon as. a national - shrine and they maintain it to this day. This is the wldest patriotic association ot s womer. in America: LOSS OF LIBERTY It is a matter of history that brave men fight and obtain it at the sacrifice of their blood It is.a matter of history. that the vulzures and the selfish lose liberty fighting over the fruits of the. victory that brave men have won. : Chirst tells us that when o one devil ie cast out and the house is clean and left empty, swept and garnished, the same. oe devil will gc out and find seven other devils more wicked than he is and bring 2 them in with him. History shows this is true of nations -and when breve men have won freedom _ they go back to their homes to live a life of peace, and eaters of the loaves and va fishes take over, then they go out to find seven more tc bring in. They flood the | country with immigrants of their own kind and in a few years the country is A in worse shape than it was at the begin- ning. Let us hzpe and pray that the day = is not too far distant when scene to dc again the job of making America free.
