Tom Linder Commissioner ee al By TOM LINDER before me copy of House Bill / Gardner of Albany, Georgia; - Albany, Georgia; Stocks of de of Albany, Georgia; Durham, istance down the river from Al- eorgia; and Nelson of Hawkins- Bots fo be a Dill to act up ' livestock control. It is a copy ill No. 507 passed at the 1952 yt that it sets up a board the Commissioner of Agricul- nister the law. ture is that he is elected a of the State and is not he few selfish interest who to. grind. < Id have in mind primarily of people who own livestock, tying and solve livestock. stry i in Georgia under proposed No. 166. This bill provides ittee of five persons to be ap- FROM THE PACKING IN. GEORGIA, zoe ONE PRODUCERS OF . Of course there are of small operators in Georgia ickers dominate and control, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 1953 ose Livestoc ly Bbjection to the Commission- hority set. up to deal with | y those few who make their | see who would control the live- rember from livestock producers, lets see who the other members would be. One from the Stockyard Operators in Georgia. The large barn operators like Albany and Atlanta are controlled by . the packers insofar as prices are concern- ed. Many of the other markets in the State are controlled by packing house interest for the simple reason that they must have buyers from the packers in order to operate their business. One from the Dairy- Operators in _ Georgia. Who are the main dairy opera- tors in Georgia? They are also foreign corporations doing business in Georgia, such as Southern Dairies, Inc., Borden Milk Company, The Home Stores, Inc., and Foremost Dairies, Inc. Of course we have some Cooperatives operating in Georgia and some local operators. One from the Veterinary Profession in Georgia How many veterinarians do you know who own any livestock? One fruin the Producers of livestock in Georgia. Livestock in its broad term includes cattle of. all kinds, hogs of all kinds, sheep, goats and poultry of all kinds. Of all the farmers in Georgia pro- ducing livestock of any kind, there would only be one member allowed on this COBUAITIEE. This committee of five would submit to the-Governor the names of two per- sons from each congressional district and the Governor would be required to ap- point one of the two names submitted to him for this committee, This would mean in practice that every member of the board would either be connected with a packer or with a livestock barn. Even - the member who was supposed to repre-_ sent the producers of livestock would probably be a livestock barn man who had a farm. Recently in the Market Bulletin I told you that for every fifty cents the barn man has invested, the farmer has two hundred dollars invested. This is a bill to take the farmer and his two hun- dred dollar investment and turn him over to the barn man with his fifty cent investment. If you need any further oof of this, come up to the lobby of which is perhaps the largest single barn _ in the State Capitol, Thursday, January | let their representatives know that they the Henry Grady Hotel and see the city, slicker with his bulging pockethools operating. i Mr. Taxi Smith of Albany, Georgia, is employed to lobby for the bill and his law partner, Mr. Gardner from Al- bany, is one of the authors of the bill, So is the other Representative from Al- bany. The operator of the Albany sale barn, in Georgia, was in my office Monday morning with Mr. Smith complaining. a that in his barn in Alabama No. 1 hogs e were selling for two cents less than No- 36 1 hogs in his. Albany yard. He thought this was an awful situation that hogs were bringing two cents more in Georgia than in Alabama. This alone shows where the water is hitting the wheet and who is behind this bill to take the Georgia farmers interest out of the Department of Agriculture and put it in a board of < auction barn men, es There will be a hearing on this bill es 29th. The farmers who own livestock are the ones who have the most vital interest. They have many good men in the Legislature to look after their interest. I come in contact with many of them ~ every day. I believe they will see that this bill is killed, but the farmer should appreciate their efforts. The will of the people can only be maintained when their | affairs are in the hands of officials whom the people elect. They do not have any | control over appointed boards. If this bill were law, it would hurt the Department of Agriculture by taking | from it one of the tools it needs to de its job. What it would take away from the Department of Agriculture is un- important as compared to what it would take from YOU. It woula take away - YOUR treasured right to choose by your votes your public servants. Big meat packers, big dairies and cow traders would have the controlling vote. os (majority).
