Georgia Farmers om Linder Commissioner WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1952 NUMBER 10 a- Editorial By TOM LINDER . Ss . On January 20, 1953, General Eisen- iss a shower will be inaugurated President the United States. For the first ime since March 4, 1933 a Republican idministration will sit in Washington. During the 20 years of Democratic ave been given posts of high impor- policy has come from men of Republi- _can affiliation. Inthe election of November 4, 1952, Virginia, Florida, Texas and Tennes- see cast their votes for Eisenhower. Most of the southern states gave Eis- _ enhower a good vote. "portion of farm population than any other section. They also have a major part of the nations agriculture pro- _ duction. Here is the greatest diversi- ety of agricultural production of any _ section of the country. Here is the | ae development and progress in agriculture in recent years of any sec- _ tion. : i It would be most detrimental, not " only to the south but to the nation as -a whole, for the southern states to be- "come over-industrialized. It has been the aim of southern leaders to bring about a balance between industry and SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE dministration, many Republicans. _tance. Much of the best advice and- ; The southern states include a larger iriculture in the southern states. However, no one here wants to see over-industrialization as has occurred in the east and some other sections of the country. The south is rapidly becoming a great livestock section. We still pro- duce most of the cotton. Our forests are growing more young timber than any other area. The well distributed rivers, creeks, branches and under- ground streams make this the area where irrigation can be used more economically to the farmer and with less governmental aid than anywhere in the United States. ; Because of our long growing sea- sons, our diversity of soil and climate, we can and do produce more different crops than anywhere else: citrus fruits of practically all kinds, nuts and fruits of many kinds, vegetables and truck crops of most kinds, to say nothing of our yast production of basic crops such as corn, cotton, tobacco, peanuts and hay. In addition, the south is now producing all manner of livestock, Georgia has become the largest broil- er producer of any state in the nation, and is selling in and out of the state some of the finest breeding stock of both dairy and beef cattle. Other southern states are making like prog- ress and developments. COOPERATION IN CONGRESS In recent years some of the greatest FROM THE SOUTH? good to the nation has been due to coalition on specific measures between representatives of Democratic and Re- publican states. It has never been true that all the brains and all the pa- triotism were confined to any one political party. With world conditions as they are and with the tremendous problems facing this nation, it would be well for any president to look over the field and select men for key posts who are not only 100 percent Amert- can, but who have also spent their lives in gaining experience in fields which especially fit them for the job to which they are called. Nowhere, except in the south with its great diversity of agriculture, car a man be found who has persona familiarity and experience with the wide range of agricultural crops and livestock that a secretary of agricul- ture should have. | know from personal experience and association that a great many farmers of the great middle western states, the southwest and far west would be well pleased for the post of Secretary of Agriculture to go to a suitable man from the south, TOM LINDER Commissioner of Agriculture | GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN |) on tig mailing litt and for cliamge of address to STATE BU.
