On August 7, Governor Herman Tal- madge wired President Truman as fol- lows: BECAUSE OF LONG UNPRECE- DENTED DROUTH MANY AGRICUL- TURAL SECTIONS IN GEORGIA HAVE SUFFERED STAGGERING LOSSES TO THEIR CROPS AND UN- TOLD DAMAGES !N_ LIVESTOCK -PRODUCING AREAS LEAVING THOUSANDS. An exchange of wires continued either direct with the President or Hon. Raymond Foley, Administrator, Housing _ and Home Finance Agency, Washington, D. C., which agency under Public Law 875 is required to make the recommenda- tions to the President as to the needs in case of a disaster: On August 18, the Governor wired Mr. Foley in vart as follows: T HEREBY APPOINT AND DES- IGNATE HON. TOM fINDER, COM- MISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA, AS MY PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVE TO DEAL WITH YOU ABOUT THE DROUTH AREA IN GEORGIA. _In the meantime, imimediately follow- ing the Nashville meeting, the State Agri- NOTICE Livestock Quotations Beginning in the next issue of the Market Bulletin, we will carry mar- ket quotations on cattle and livestock showing prices being paid at each auction barn in the state. TOM LINDER Commissioner of Agriculture silnteak: Mobilization Committee, of which I am a member by appointment of the Secretary of Agriculture, which is composed of all agricultural agencies both Federal and Staten Georgia, called a meeting to ascertain our needs, A wire was dispatched to all County Mobilization Committees which wes fol- lowed by a questionnaire requesting that immediate action be taken to determine current needs in their cespective coun- ties. By August 1], 145 counties had reported, and 32 couniies ranging from Catoosa, Gordon and Pickens in North Georgia, to Liberty, Wayne, Coffee Mil- ler and Mitchell in Souih Georgia, show- ed they needed hay immediately. The report showed that within 90 days 28,715 tons would be needed and approximately 10,000 -tons of that would he needed immediately. The questionnaire further reveals that 123 counties revoited they would not produce enough corn to meet their requirements and that they would have to purchase outside the county 10 1/2 million bushels. 93 counties reported | farmers were being forced to market marketed late in the fall or the spring of 1953. Another important observation was made in that these counties would have to secure $6,000,00.00 credit that could not be furnished !ocally in order to plant their fall and winter grazing crops and that approximately $22,000,- 000.00 would be needed to finance the 1953 crop. : This information was submitted to the Secretary of Agriculture by Mr. T. R. Breedlove, Chairmin, Georgia Agri- cultural Mobilization Committee, August 14 and 20th. On August 25, Governor Talmadge again wired Mr Foley in part as follows: THIS WIRE IS TO ASSURE YOU THAT A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF THE FUNDS -OF?
