torial By TOM LINDER ler date of December 19, 1951, The Journal carried an editorial as m Linder Lies Market Bulletin - T TO KEEP the record straight be- fore the people of Georgia, we call r attention to false and malicious ments being circulated at taxpayers" se by Tomi Linder, commissioner of ulture. What is the truth about the milk ation in Georgia? Mr. Linder asks igned editorial occupying the en- t page of the Market Bulletin for er i2. 7 me : 3 : His own answer to his question in- these words: 2 is the kind of slops (milk which ained manure, flies and every conceiv- orm of filth) the Atlanta newspapers you to feed to your children. Vhy does the Atlanta newspapers want ll slops to your children? Because there fimancial tie of big business with the ship of The Atlanta Constitution and Atlanta Journal which makes powdered and other slops in many states and they to feed it to your children. Those statements are lies. om Linder knows they are lies. t, I want to say that I am glad The | carried to its readers in Atlanta, do not see the Market Bulletin, the hat some powdered milk contains re, flies and every conceivable form LANTA NEWSPAPERS, INC., NANCIAL INTEREST IN POWDERED MILK ve before me advertising rates ed by Atlanta Newspapers, Inc., as d by their Advertising Department Constitution $2.98 per column The Journal $3.86 per column Both together $5.32 per column ere are 172 inches per page, One in The Constitution would be 96. One page in The Journal would 63.92. One page in both Constitu- nd Journal would be $915.04. These ocal rates. Nationally advertised ts come at $13.30 per inch or WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1952 ANTA NEWSPAPERS, INC.. NUMBER 16 $2,287.60 per page in both papers. At- lanta Newspapers, Ine., having a monop- oly in this area, refuse to take advertis- ing at national rates unless the advertiser uses both papers. How is that for a racket? RADIO, TELEVISION AND NEWSPAPERS In addition to the exorbitant charges by this monopolistic set-up, the radio and television holdings of this same crowd is a gold mine of revenue for advertising powdered milk. Those who listen to the W. S. B. radio and who have television sets are con- tinually harangued by advertisements of different kinds of powdered milk, some of which no doubt contains, manure, flies and every conceivable.form of filth. SLOPS ADVERTISED THROUGH -"ATLANTA NEWSPAPERS, INC. I have before me official report cover- ing Dairy Products Company of Birming- ham, Alabama, whose powdered milk is sold under the name of Cloverleaf. This report made on the premises of Dairy Products Company, Birmingham, Alabama, shows first that Cloverleaf is a conglomeration made by mixing dif- ferent kinds of powdered milk from dif- ferent manufacturers. On the date this inspection was made, they had on hand and were mixing powdered milk from Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York. None of the employees who handled the powdered milk had health certificates. Much of the powder was being spilled on the floor. Sweeping compound was found on the floors. Female employees neces- sarily had to walk through packing room to get to toilet. Employees were walking over sweeping compound and also pow-. dered milk spilled in packing room. I also have before me another official report covering the same premises which showed larvae capsules (bug eggs) were found on the warehouse floor about two feet from where 100 pound bags of dry mill: solids were stored. About 20 such larvae (bug eggs) were noted in about 20 inches square. Vial containing. the capsules is submitted as Inv. 94-511K, Sub 2. Insects were noted under bags on the floor of the warehouse. These in- sects were very small. Near the base of the stack of dry milk solids were hard shelled insects. These insects averaged about one every two feet and were with- in 20 inches of the stack. Insects were found in cracks on the platform near the hopper where the bags of powdered milk were emptied for repacking, Insects were noted in the hoppers of powdered milk. All the filth and insanitary conditions here referred to apply only to the mixin of powdered milk and packaging in smal packages. The filth contained in the powder already was, of course, passed on in addition to the filth picked up in this packing plant. S. T. Jerrell Company, Birmingham, Alabama, also buys different brands of powdered milk and mix them together and put out a product in small packages which they call Jerrells Economy Brand. No doubt the readers of The Atlanta Newspaper Monopoly and the ~ listeners of radio and television are aware of the tremendous amount of ad- vertising they have received from Jer- rell. They are also familiar with the tre mendous amount of advertising of Star= lac and Kim as well as other brands of powdered milk carried in big and little advertisements. Much of the advertisements carried by Atlanta Newspapers, Inc., as well ag reading matter on many packages of - powdered milk are grossly - misleading and are designed to defraud the unsus- pecting purchaser or user of such pow- dered milk. LITTLE REVENUE FROM GOOD MILK There is practically no revenue for ad- vertising of good wholesome cows millk as produced by Grade A dairymen. They are not able to buy advertising space or time on the radio and television. There is small profit to the producers of good wholesome Grade A milk. The profit is in powder. At the pres- ent time, powder costs about 18 cents per pound in quantity. One pound makes five quarts, At 16 cents per quart, one pound of powder and five quarts of wa- ter costs the consumer 80 cents. This is a profit of 225 percent. With a monop- oly in the milk business and a*monopoly in the newspaper business, the racket can run into millions of dollars. One car of 30 tons of powdered milk will make 300,000 quarts. 300,000 quarts at 16 cents is $48,000.00. The 30 tons of powder costs $10,800.00. This leaves a gross profit of $37,200.00 on an invest- ment of $10,800.00. On a hundred car- (Continued on Page Four) af ag!
