Tom Linder Commissioner WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 1951 _. NUMBER aa ; The following address was deliver- the special invitation of the am committee by Tom Linder the Sixty- -First and Final Re- _ ion of the United Confederate s at Norfolk, Virginia, Wed- Noon, May 30th? 4 y ceased to resist oppression on tlefield when organized eG longer -possible. th most part ragged, barefoot, , they retired from the bloody. 1 of heroism and death, leaving be- them the hallowed graves of a mul- - uphold and preserve the Declara- of Independence and the Constitu- a free America. no other course was left open to- ey signed their paroles. Northern. soldiers returned ory. Since that time four score six years have gone. by. ur score and six times old Father has completed his yearly cycle he last bugle call was sounded, the last Rebel yell was heard fight- nder the Stars and Bars. our score and six times the Autumn have floated down upon the gentle e to find their last resting place on osom of Mother Earth and to make ve soldiers who fell in that desperate fear by year the ranks of thg have grown thinner and _and more they were ighing pines, the \ST RE-UNION OF THE MEN GREY TIL WE MEET AGAIN score. aod six years ago the man - comrades who had given their - whispering oaks. and ths fields and for- ests, which they loved so well. Four score and six times the shrinking violets have timidly raised their heads from their Winter hiding place to glad: _ den the hearts of mankind. The rosebuds have sprung into new _ life and flaunted their wanton beauty. to delight the discerning eye. The honey- suckles have saturated the balmy air with the odor of the nectar of the Gods, -and the song birds have awakened the echoes of music with their renewed mes- _ sage of light and love and life. Four score and six times the cruel heat of Summer has burned down upon the heads of the thinning ranks of surviving heroes. The cruel cold of Winter has chilled _ the marrow in the bones of some of those who were too proud to eat the bread of charity, and whose spirit of self-reliance and determination caused them to walk erect, and carry a friendly smile, with | utter disregard of their own physical needs. Four score and six years they have led the way through many political Chicka- maugas, Atlantas, Appomattoxes, and Gettysburgs, and now as the sun goes down on the last lingering few of the -armies of the Confederacy, let us give them the honors of their native states, and crown them with the laurels of vic- tory. The valor and Spartan courage of the people of the Confederate States from 1861-65, as well as the immortal deeds of courage, unrivaled in history, by the men of the Confederate forces, have become immortal, and need no commendation by me or anyone else because they were carved in indestructible form in the hearts and minds of brave people, and will shine as an example to men and na- tions of the future when the little men who sought to- degrade them have been entirely forgotten in the dust of antiqui- ty. The principle of the States Rights as recognized in the Constitution. of the United States is still and must always be the very cornerstone of the liberties of America and, whatever politicians, prop- agandists, and agitators may say, the shining fact that it was the men of the South who sought to uphold the Consti- tution, is inescapable. As the last reunion of the men who wore the Grey is being held, let it be remembered that the cause for they fought is immortal and, while the men who followed Lee and Jackson have ly joined eae in the great beyond, flaunt in his face the Stars and Bars un- which / and, while the sons and daughters of those heroes are themselves marching down the road of time in the evening of life, yet their grandsons and granddaugh- ters and succeeding generations will re- member why, and will carry on the fight as God gives them strength to preserve our country and our Constitution and will in spirit always respond to the ene- my with the Rebel Yell and will til the principles for which they fought and died are rcognized and obeyed. Here in Norfolk, Virginia, by the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, along the rivers and harbors where the first set-- tlers came to build a free world is a fit- ting place to commemorate the last meet- ing on earth of the Men in Grey. Not far from here landed the first Eng- lish Colony of Roanoke, which vanished from the face of the earth, Just a few miles away on Cape Henry of is the spot where the Pilgrims Fathers first landed among unfriendly red men, but by the mercies of God they were re- noved by ship, and came up the river to. found Jamestown. Be From the founding of Jamestown to the signing of the Declaration of Inde-~ pendence was 169 years. e From the signing of the Declaration of Independence to the close of the second World War was 169 years. Eighty-six years have gone by sinc the challenge of the great Southern lead- er to rebuild the South the South whicb ~ grew from the Cavaliers of Jamestowa, the South; which in fact gave birth te the nation we call the U. S. A. During that 86 years from Appomattox until today the men and women of the South have more than rebuilt the states of the Confederacy. The men and women of the Sixties and their sons and daughters have builded 2 material South, which transcends any- thing that existed prior to the War Be- tween The States. However, the damage done to the Con- stitution whereby the sovereignty of the states was abridged has not been repair- ed. Perhaps it can never be repaired. Perhaps the glory of the republic, the richest diadem of which was the sover- eign states, equal among themselves, will never be restored. One thing we know. If ever we are ta restore the sovereignty and equality of the states, it can only be done by the present and future generations with the (Continued on Page Four) PAGE TWO MARKET BULLETIN GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Ad@ress.ail items for publication and all requests to be put i on the mailing list and for change of address to STATE BU: | REAU OF MARKETS; 222 STATE CAPITOL, Atlanta. of notice.
