You will note Hoe ee sf te ASE LABORATORY tthe Posty I i The work that by growers would have been re than they have been. oduction of broilers in Northeast has reached record proportions | fame of oes cbuekone has ce and hee ween available 2SSOrs shipping dressed poultry state and in foreign commerce. nent of Oe } ederal Graders | State Capitol = are made available to plants in need of them. About three eeke ago I was in Miami, Florida, and heard a great deal about : Georgia chickens and I saw signs up in front of merchants places reading, Geor- gia chickens for sale here. I was told there that Georgia chickens always bring a premium on the market, especially those that are advertised as Georgia chickens and are so labeled as to attract attention to their Georgia origin. Since the National emergency has arisen it has become necessary to provide poultry inspection acceptable to the Army, and for shipment overseas, by qualified veterinarians. In order to in- sure the widest market for Georgia poul- try and meat, I have just approved an ad- ditional cooperative agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture - to carry this into effect. | _. BALANCED AGRICULTURE One of the greatest safeguards for Georgia agriculture is provided in the fact that our farm income from. forest- products, our: income from field crops and our income from livestock and live- stock products, including poultry, are so well balanced. I believe this is a good balance to maintain. It is putting our eggs in three baskets instead of putting them in one basket. i LIVESTOCK Georgia progress in development of the livestock business, other than poultry, is also astounding because it has developed like the poultry business in just a few years. In 1935, the total income on live- stock and livestock products was only a 13.2% of the total income from crops and livestock. We did not include the income from forests. If the ineome from forest products had been included the percent- age would have been considerably less. In 1950, the total income from crops and livestock was $472,037,000.00 and the percentage furnished by livestock and livestock products was approximately 35.2%. _ Because of the large increase in num- bers of cattle and because of the rapid improvement in the type of cattle on Georgia farms, it became increasingly necessary to carry out a consistent pro- gram for the control and eradication of _ Brucellosis (Bangs Disease), T.B. and oth- er animal diseases. In order to give every possible assistance to farmers and herd owners, I have also made a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Animal Industry of the United States Depart- ment of Agriculture for carrying out \a plan of giving assistance to the herd owners who are interested in having dis- ease free herds, and this service is now available to all herd owners who make application and who are willing to sign an agreement to maintain their herds in accordance with the requirements of the agreement. Many outstanding herd owners have already taken advantage of this oppor- tunity. I have purchased.a machine for . the Veterinary Division which cost lots of money, but which keeps a perfect and complete record of each and every animal: in each herd and, which, will automatic- ally compile the record on each herd from cards which are run through the ma- chine. Any time that you are in Atlanta, . worth your while to come to see me and let me show you the wonderful and amaz- ing performance of this machine. It is gratifying to know that Georgia is the only State in the Sixth Federal Re- serve District that shows an increase of income from both crops and livestock in 1950 over 1949. TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture Rural Mail Box Improvement Week Honorable Tom Linder Commissioner of Agriculture Atlanta, . Georgia _ Dear Commissioner Linder: The Post Office Department has designated the week ending May 5, 1951, as Rural Mail Box Im- provement Week. Since I have been Postmaster | here, I have found that almost all of our Rural Route Patrons receive the Market Bulletin and en- joy reading it very much. If you can give we Postmasters and Rural Carriers a news item from the clipping enclosed, I know it will be appreci- ated everywhere your bulletin is delivered. When your subscribers here are a little late re- ceiving their copy they really | start asking for. Ht this is why I know they enjoy it so much. i want to congratulate your department on thie -sorrect oe Satay used in mailing the bulletin, which saves time and helps the clerks in the of- fice here when sorting the mails. If I can ever be of service to you please call on me, Respectfully, ELBERT &. CAMPBELL, Acting Postmaster The Department has designated the week end- ing May 5, 1951, as Rural Mail Box Improvement Week. Rural mail boxes which are not properly erect- ed or which are not in good, serviceable condition retard the delivery of mail and expose it to dam- age from the elements. It is the desire of the Department to encourage patrons of the rural delivery service to provide suitable mail receptacles and to erect them ia such manner that they will be readily accessible to the carrier and present a neat appearance. Tt is especially desirable that the boxes be main- (Continued on Page Four) if you are interested in this, it will be we PAGE TWO on the mailing: list, andi REAU OF MARKETS, GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Address all items for publication and all requests to be put : fox rma 222; STA of address: to STATE BU- CAPITOL, Atlanta. gota of farm cya under postage regulat: of notice. \ Limited space will not Under Legislative Act the notices.
