The real worth of Farmers Markets cannot be measured by performance alone. If it could be determined how much the agricultural progress of the State would have been retarded, or how much less the growers would have re- ceived for their products, or how much more it would have cost them to market their products had it not been for these State Markets, then we would have some appreciation of their real value. 2 In addition to our Farmers Markets, _we are participating in other marketing phases that are of tremendous impor- tance in helping the farmer market his products profitably. Under the provision of a Marketing Agreement, all peaches shipped out of the State of Georgia must be graded and accompanied by a Federal- This inspection is an- other phase of our cooperative work with the United States Department of Agricul- ture, which has_ resulted. peaches establishing an enviable reputa- tion on the various markets of the coun- try. Detouring: or by-passing of the middleman by buyers purchasing direct from the growers seems to be continuing. The growth of the chain store to the point where they buy in truckload quan- tities enables them to buy direct from _ the farmer, through Farmers Markets. ~~ Many independent stores are pooling their orders and buying direct through established firms on the assembly mar- kets. An increasing number of large re- tailers send their trucks to the Georgia State Markets and purchase various prod- ucts and deliver direct to the small re- tail stores, by-passing the middleman and. eliminating service handling charges. If the quality of our products on the as- sembly markets are kept at a high stand- ara, it seems. reasonable to believe that this type of buying would increase ap- _ preciably. ~In 1949, I was notified by the United States Department of Agriculture that _ in Georgia additional Federal funds had been made s available to expand the Livestock Mar- ket News Service in Georgia. eral years, this service has been available For sev- at Thomasville, serving major packing iS plants in Georgia, Alabama and Florida. Surveys were miade in the Atlanta area and livestock dealers, auction operators, county agents and farmers were contact- tional service. Department of Agriculture entered inte a Cooperative Agreement with the Live- stock Branch PMA, U. 8. Department of Agriculture, providing for Federal-State Livestock Market News Service to serve the livestock industry in the area. The initial broadcast and report, disseminating Livestock: Market News, was issued June, 1950. Livestock Auc- tion Markets at Rome, Gainesville, Ath- ens, Thomaston and Atlanta are covered weekly. For the nine-months period June 1950-March 1951,94,000 cattle and calves and 29,000 hogs have been sold on a were graded according to USDA standards and these markets. These animals prices compiled for each grade and class. This information is disseminated daily threugh the Associated Press, the area. The office issues a weekly review, showing receipts, prices, etc., in the At- lanta area and twelve Mid-western Mar- kets which goes to the trade, livestock dealers and producers. This service has enjoyed enthusiastic response since its inception. In addition to the nearly l, 000 who receive the Weekly Review, matty thousands read the On January 1, 1951, there were 1,330,000 cattle and calves on Georgia farms, an increase of 110,000 over 1950. The cash income from livestock and livestock prod- ucts was $165,979,000 in 1950, compared to $33,801,000 in 1940. Recognizing the fact that Georgia eggs, poultry and dairy products were being discriminated against by Government hospitals. Military Installations and oth- er Government agencies because Federal grading service was not available in Georgia, I took steps to correct it. In the early part of 1949, I initiated a Coop- erative Federal-State grading program in accordance with the provisions of a Memorandum of Agreement, and the work was begun in July, 1949.
